American firearms was a outfit in Kansas that imported and assembled firearms. They have been out of business for years. Most of their handguns I've run across haven't been top quality. I would think twice before springing for any of their stuff unless you could get it dirt cheap and be sure that it was functional without any problems.

Remington on the other hand made high quality .22's. If the price is right and it's factory original, and functional, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Thanks for your input. I live by what I get for answers through this forum. I did buy the Remington for $160.00 and yes it does shoot but I am having a hard time with locating ammo. I have it soaking in CLP and tonight I will wipe it down and put it away with all of the rest of them. I do not plan on shooting it but still like having ammo for the guns I have. It does look like someone tried to smooth out he wood with a light sanding and fortunately they did nothing to the metal. Again, thanks for your input and you have a great website.

Caliber .25 auto is a very poor round. I believe it would have trouble knocking down ground squirrels, much less acting as a self defense round. Modern .22LR ammo is probably the better choice of the two IF you were going to choose between the two for self defense.

Having said that, if you are interested in a good .22LR auto pistol, try to find a decent example of a Ruger MkI or MkII. Should be able to pick up a good example of either one for $250 or less.

If you are interested in a recommendation of choice between the two guns you mentioned, my take is that I would not choose either of them.

Thank you everyone for your input. I bought the Remington for $160.00 and have cleaned it up. Unfortunately, someone tried to sand the stock and forearm but not to the extent of hurting it too much. Overall, it is pretty clean and I have no intention of shooting it. I collect older style firearms and sometimes I look for the more unusual and not so popular. This one will fit into my collection quite nicely. My three sons will really enjoy this collection some day.
