S&W Model 49
I have a S&W mod.49 bodyguard, blued(98%), pinned barrel, serrated trigger, factory wood grips & safariland finger groove grips. ser.#J905xxx. What was the DOM and what is it worth? Is there any value in the box/papers? I have checked on the sale side, and there are none for sale right now. thanks for the help. lee...

1959 was when they came out. I know they changed the cylinder release latch from flat to the regular style in '66 and diamond grips went away in '68. They were in production til around '96/'97. 0 -

Well they should have the serial number in pencil on the inside of the grips if they are original to the gun. If they don't match your gun you can always factory letter it to see what it had and a serial number will get you closer to a manuf date--but I don't have a Standard Catalog of S&W to tell you that but I'm sure others here on the board have the book. 0 -
If by first gen, you mean the model 49 before they went to the 49-1, it was from 1959 when this model was started to 1988 when the 49-1 began life.
There were several changes to this model before the 49-1 came along. Those include:
1. Change of thumbpiece away from the flat latch, 1966.
2. Stopping use of diamond grips, 1968.
3. Beginning to use the "J" prefix on serial numbers, 1969.
4. Deleting pinned barrel, 1982.

I have a 1956 Gun Digest, and the Bodyguard appears in it. Somewhere around 1958 it was assigned a model number. 0
