Flatop AR scope/mount opinion please
I've got a flatop DPMS I want to scope with a Nikon 4x - 40mm that performed very well on my 308 with bright clear images.
I used "high" rings on the AR, but the scope bell just barely touches the handgard...an un-acceptable condition.
Cheek weld is fine with the high rings, and probably would be with x-high, but I was leary of the high rings, even though recoil is light.
I'm considering x-high rings or a modified handguard.
All opinions appreciated... as always.

As always - Thanks for the feedback. A wave of common sense hit me and I grabbed a file as Ncwid mentioned. A little care and some light polishing gave me a custom cleared handguard. I hope to make a shake-down trip soon for my first 'high ring' experience. I'll post. Thanks again.

The only advice I can offer is trial and error. The alternative is to check the specs on various rings until you find another maker whose rings are slightly higher than the ones you have. Brownells catalog used to have a comparison chart in the back to help with this. I would rather use higher rings than risers due to the tolerance stacking involved throwing the scope alignment off. They'll be lighter, too. 0 -
Try this! Worked for me.

Not sure what handguards you have but a buddy had the same problem with standard handguard. He just filed a spot where the scope was just barely touching.
I went with an extended length GG&G and standard rings since I needed to move my scope forward, http://www.gggaz.com/index.php?id=42&parents=38,42
Mine is a 4-14x50,
Sorry got shorted on time earlier. Scope is an IOR 4-14x50 with Night Force Medium rings.
Here is another better pic,

I am using a very similar set up on one of mine. Instead of a GG&G I used a Yankee hill machine extended riser and Burris medium rings. It gets the scope far enough forward for eye relief and high enough to get a good anchor point every time. My scope is also a Nikon, monarch to be exact.
Here is what I used.

I work at a range and these guys are local. I have seen some neat stuff from them, and the prices are right. One of their employees shoots 300 yard league there, and has yet to be beat in the last 2 years. Uses all MI stuff for mounts, risers etc...0 -
I used the RRA hi rise mount and it works fine for me.
