30-30 black powder loads
Is there such a thing and if so what would be a good hunting load, say for deer. Thanks

You may get an answer here or try the BP forum at

I will break my own rule about posting loads on the internet with this one. Depending on the bullet used, 29 to 30 grains of fffg powder is a good deer load. You may have a compressed load with this. You can not over load that case with a black powder, you run out of capacity before you can do any damage. The danger is too little powder, not too much in that size case.
The question is WHY??? You are going to have a mess to clean up after shooting. you are about to fill the gun's action with the foulest, dirtiest propellant ever made.0 -
Check out the Hogden manuals. They will have limited data for pyrodex or at least mine does for 30-30. Their sight may have more data. 0 -
Not really a good idea but if you do use cast bullets with the right kind of lube. The 30-30 was never a black powder number so what's the point? 0 -
Fill case to where the bullet will seat with FFG or FFFG. Tap to settle powder, and top off back to that depth.
Seat the bullet so it contacts the powder.
Since the gun has rifling designed for smokeless, you'll probably only get 2-3 shots with any accuracy before it is a fouled mess, particularly if using jacketed bullets with no lube.
However, it should seal the case just fine and shouldn't foul the action.
Clean up with hot soapy water.
It can be done, but again I'd ask why?0
