SAKO Forester
I havent been able to find any reliable information on the value of this Forester and attached scope. If I can provide additional details to better show what I have, let me know. Below is a link to pictures. Thanks!

At a quick glance, I'd say that started life as a Sako Forester, and is now a nice varmint/target gun with that Unertyl on there, which would explain your issue finding it in the books. Having said that. the barrel legend looks original now that I see that pic...did not know Sako made the Forester as a varmint gun?! Thought that and the Vixen both were woodland guns?! Nice looking scope by the way; should turn a pretty penny with that on there! 0 -
I had a Forester with a heavy barrel although more rare than with the standard of course. I usually don't like to break up items,,but the scope if good shape will bring a good piece of change. The rifle has been drilled now so it will be shooter priced,,500,,,+ maybe,,scope,,let someone else do that one. 0 -
You are right on with this! It was my dad's groundhog gun (here in the NC mountains its pretty popular) but I dont use it much myself. I think that the stock is custom; he may have even crafted it himself as he was an accomplished furniture maker... don't know what that does to the value...
So I'm thinking of selling both the scope and the rifle but I want a fair price for them... I dont need to get rid of it quickly, but I have no idea where to start price wise.

Hey Stimpy,
Did a little digging, and as it turns out I was wrong (no surprise there), since Sako did indeed make a heavy barreled Vixen and Forester, though as noted, they are much less common than their woodland style rifles. The barrel legend you pictured is definately original as far as I am concerned, but as mentioned, the stock looks all wrong. I would think Sako rarely, if ever made a stock that beautiful for a varmint gun...your Dad had maaaaaaad skills with wood! Also, the grip caps style screams American to be sure. I don't know if you will realize more money seperating them or not. My take on it? Sell them together if you must sell it at all; I wold keep Dad's gun, but thats me, and I also don't know your situation.

Check the prices on the scopes on this guys site. Find yours in there and see what it costs by itself! You got a fantastic set-up. I would keep it in the family, but as mentioned , you know what you need to do better than I. Good luck!0 -
That scope looks like the 2" target model. It alone should bring $800 or more. Being 12 power will hurt it as the 20 or higher power ones are more in demand. The scope should have screw on lens covers. If they are not on the scope you should try to find them. I once owned a varmint model Forester in .243 cal. The stock was different than on your rifle. In this case I would say sell the scope and rifle separately to get top prices. 0 -
Stimpy- I can see enough of the stock to be reasonably sure that it is a Sako factory stock, made for the HB Varmint model Forester. Yours appears to be well cared for and should be worth in excess of $1000 at auction with the scope on it, as well as the bipod setup. The Ser# tells me it was made close to the end of 1960 which was the first year of production for the L579 Foresters. I would leave the scope on it as the holes that were drilled to accomodate it will not work for much else.-Best, Mike 0 -
Stimpy- I appologize- that is not a Sako Stock on your rifle. I lightened it up and could find no checkering.-Mike 0 -
Scope, with the rifle, provided mechanical condition overall is as good as it looks cosmetically...way beyond $1000. I would start the bidding at $1200 and see how far above that it went....I would bet around $1500. 0
