Powders for 7x57 Light Bullets
Hi, new guy to the forum. Was wondering if the readers here might recommend some good powders, preferably ball powders. The ball powders go through the measure better, and I'm not looking to enter any tournaments. So I'll give up a little accuracy in return for the convenience of using the ball powders. Looking to work up some varmint loads loads in this cal. Thanks in advance. BTW, the gun is a '95 Chilean Mauser with the original barrel if any of you are shooting that one. Thanks

I don't load for the Grand Old 7 (regrettably) but I can turn pages pretty well, LOL!
The Hodgdon Annual Manual prefers a bit slower powder than 748. For bullets in the 110 to 120-gr range, they list H414/W760 as their spherical choice. It give speeds in the 2800 to 3100 fps range, depending on bullet used.
Actually, I recommend staying at a velocity closer to what your big-game loads develop. That way, you quite often have the same trajectory as your hunting load and may not even have to re-sight the gun when you change ammo. If your 140-gr hunting bullet develops 2800 fps, work up a varmint load that does about the same. In your '95 Mauser, sticking with milder loads is probably a good idea, anyway.0 -
I use IMR 4895 in my Mauser 0 -
While it's not the ball powder you prefer, the IMR 4895 is excellent for light bullet or reduced loads with most any cartridge. I've had fairly good results with 140 grain loads in a 1916 Mauser(similar to the 95) but lighter bullets didn't do as well. Chamber shape and throat length might be a factor as most of the earlier military ammo used 175 grain bullets and the throat may be quite worn on a rifle of this age. 0
