The original sale of S & W from the Wesson family heirs was in the mid 60's. Your pistol with 4 digit model number couldn't have been made any earlier then the mid 80's, when their had been at least one additional ownership change.

There were 3 ownership changes of Smith & Wesson over the years, 1965, 1987 & 2001. The model 5946 was made from 2000 to 2002. Without the serial number the year of manufacture is just a guess.

Value estimations are based on condition so pictures would be nice. The blue book lists the 5946 values as follows.

    100% cond $615
    98% ... " ... $500
    95% ... " ... $400
    90% ... " ... $335

Thank you. I'm not sure I know the difference between a 95 and a 90 but you've helped a lot.

Can someone please advise what a S&W model 5946 is worth. Is this thing after the S&W ownership change?

Its changed hands a few times, but yes, the "number series" autos were made after the original owners sold the company.

In this particular case, I think the blue book may be overestimating the true market value of these guns.

The typical used Smith 5946 will probably fetch about $350, maybe give or take $50 depending on condition and whether or not it comes with accessories like extra magazines, etc.

Yes, it *could* be worth a bit more to a collector if its in like new flawless condition with original box and papers, but the fact is, most of these guns are "shooters" and many are beaten (but still nice and functional) police surplus.
