AR-18/180 Upper question
I have recently purchased an AR180 upper unit. The rear of the unit has a set of dog ear on both side of the unit with a small hole through each dog ears. The dog ear drops below the upper unit. I have an original operating manual. These dog ears do not appear on the upper unit in the manual and they are not on my other AR-180. What are they for?
Thank you.
Greg

Does it look like this?
If that is the case then the upper was originally from an AR-18 selective fire rifle.0 -
Mark:
It does not have the pin and anchor type devise the pin is holding but yes it looks like that. What is it for?

Those are the full automatic componets used in the upper receiver. 0 -
Are there full auto components in the AR18 lower units as well? I paid $500.00 for the upper is this a good deal?
Thank you

Yes, the lower contains a number of internal parts which are specific to allow selective fire and are entirely different from those found in the AR-180. The AR-180 lower is "supposed" to be blocked to prevent the installation of an AR-18 upper, but this seems to vary depending on specific rifles.0 -
This upper fits on my AR180 but not my AR180B. It is the 10.5 inch upper and I was thinking about filling out the Federal paper work to make it into a SBR. Any thoughts? 0 -
The short barreled upper would have been from a Sterling AR-18 Police Rifle, although there were also a few hundred semi auto AR-180s build with the short barrel. Some variations of the "Shorty" upper have a second pistol grip under the shortened forend, but those are not common. If you chose to do so you can file a Form 1 and pay the $200 making tax and have a Short Barreled Rifle. 0 -
Thank you for the information. Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year.
