Most all colts were numbered so that all models used the same numbers .in other words a serial number would NOT have the same serial on another model pistol . are you sure this is a COLT with 4 digit serial Pictures would be a real help up close detailed of serial and others of the sights and grips.

Hello I think it is only part of the serial Shown in your picture . It also looks like the rear of the cylinder has the chambers recessed to support the rim. If this is in fact correct then gun was made after 1930. . I would remove grips and look at Butt of pistol, and see if you can find a serial number with more digits.

That bluing wear around the muzzle is going to knock this gun out of the mint condition grade.

the rear of the cylinder is flat, no recession. Also both numbers on the gun match, the one in front of the cylinder and the one on the frame when the cylinder is open

The gun serial number is correct. Earlier officers models were intertwined with the base model. In 1930, colt started numbering the officer models separately beginning with #1. It was about 1935 or 1936 that they reached a five digit number.

The pictured gun is a .22 caliber, which chambering was introduced in 1930 with a new serial number sequence starting with serial number 1. The .22 caliber Officers Models (and the .22 caliber Official Police as well) were not numbered with the centerfires, but rather had their own special serial number sequence.

The condition does not appear "mint" to me, but it is still a nice old gun, and will make a wonderful shooter.

The "U" near the serial number is merely an assembler's mark and has no other significance.
