SKS trigger group stand off?

Maybe some one can help me out. I bought a Russian SKS and decided I wanted another sks. I found one with no trigger or mag, cheap. I had a trigger,mag and ATI stock. My problem being after assembled, the safety will not go to the off position, it goes 1/2 way and binds hard. I can put the trigger group in and snap it in, but the safety will not flip all the way down to allow the rifle to fire. The Russian comes apart and goes together in a snap. Rifles a Yugo. Any ideas???

    Part it out.

    Few, if any, parts from a Yugo SKS will fit any other make. They appear to be a little beefier than others; rumor is that they increased the size of parts to compensate for inferior steel. I haven't seen any commercial parts advertised as "made to fit the Yugo", you may want to look.

    The trigger group of any SKS is difficult to work on. If you pay a gunsmith to try to get it to work, there go your savings. Maybe that was why the Yugo was cheap.

    Take the trigger group out of the rifle cock the hammer and see if you can put the safety on, then flip the safety off. If it works outside the receiver and stock you need to take the next step and see if it is binding in the stock somewhere. If you look into the link you will see the safety catch and catch spring and you can get them into the group wrong and have problems, the spring could be causing the problem you are having. The first thing I would have checked is the lubracation and see if you can go slow and get some movement.

    It's been a while since I had an SKS apart but I think there's an interlock that prevents the takedown catch from releasing if the safety is in the off/down position. If the takedown catch is not fully engaged, the safety will not disengage or travel fully down. I've had to use a rubber hammer to get the lock to fully engage on a couple of aftermarket plastic stocks.

    Its Fixed!! Many thanks to all that had info and help. As it turned out, I removed the pin from the trigger release catch and there was a ton of gunk and grease built up in there.So much that wouldn't allow the release to move back far enough to allow the safety to move back enough. Re cleaned everything and it lock right back. Ta Da! Thanks again guys.
