I have an quackenbush which I am restoring. It has little plating left. Where can I have this rifle replated as it was originally and what kind of cost would be reasonable? 0 -
Nickel finish has been available for well over 100 years. The old Iver Johnson Safety revolvers from the 1890s were available in nickel. I am not an expert in early S&Ws and Colts but the turn of the century S&W Hand Ejector Model also had nickel as an option as well as the old Colt 1877 Lightning DA revolvers and the very early Single Action Army pistols. 0 -

Colt also nickel-plated percussion revolvers for presentation or by special orders from officers. You can see a factory-plated Model 1860 Army revolver at the NRA's National Firearms Museum:

"Buffalo Bill" Cody also owned a documented nickel-plated 1860 Colt Army although it was not factory done.
Sharps derringers also had nickel plated frames.0 -
Nickel plating was used to replace earlier, more expensive, silver plating on handguns. Plating was used more as a rust preventative than as decoration. Even cheap guns were generally plated. Blued ones are rare. 0 -
I have Wesson & Harrington and Harrington & Richardson spur trigger SA revolvers made in the early to late 1870s with nickel plating. The earliest ones had a flash plating of copper over which the nickel was then applied, as the nickel would not stick well to the iron/steel substrate. As stated before - nickel plating was used more as a corrosion resistant finish than decorative. The vast majority of H&R handguns were nickel plated well into the 1920s, when blued finish pieces began to become more desireable. As Bill said, pre 1900, blued guns are rare or at least scarce. 0 -
And they did a good job of it, too.
A factory nickel S&W topbreak in excellent condition is a real beauty.0 -
Colt Silver plated pistols all the way back in the Paterson period. However, it was not electro-plating as we know it today. Rather, it was a chemical reduction process, in which the Iron parts were submersed in a solution of silver salts along with pieces of Silver metal. Nickel plating was not done until afteer the commercial adoption of electro-plating, which in the case of Colts Patent Firearms Company was in 1868. However, factory plated Nickeled percussion Colts are very rare. Most were plated by local gunsmiths, which accounts for the absence of cylinder scenes and reduced markings on most of these weapons. 0 -
