Remington 870 multi-barrel set?
I have not seen this gun yet-
A friend of mine recently inherited an older (guessing 50's to 60's) 870. He says that it has beautiful burl wood on it, and it came with a full choke barrel, a skeet barrel and a slug barrel.
He asked if Remington ever sold a complete set like this, or was it just put together by the previous owner.
The reason he wondered about a factory set is that the barrels are perfectly matched. The skeet and full barrel are the same length, with identical full length ribs, an ivory bead and mid bead. The slug barrel is a couple of inches shorter, but still has a full length rib and sights with an ivory bead on the front blade.
The fellow who left it to him learned gunsmithing from P.O. Ackley, so my guess is that he just built the set himself -- but I thought that I would ask here. I should get to look at it myself sometime in the next few weeks.
Thanks!

Not much point in asking until you have photos for us.
But, Remington used to offer high grade versions of their trap & skeet models on the 870 & 1100. They had letter to show the grade (D - modest hand engraving, E & F with more engraving & gold inlays, etc.) These were shipped in standard boxes, & extra barrels were shipped in their own boxes.
If the serial number & other markings are not all hand engraved, it's possible that the someone just refinished the gun locally, or sent it back to the factory for extra barrels, or maybe a combination.

I'd be curious to know also. I have an older 870 that is marked 870TB. I got it with a 30 inch full choked barrel and a 28 inch IC and a smooth bore barrel with iron sights. I always assumed that a previous owner had just purchased extra barrels. The wood is very very nice burl. The gun is in 99% condition. The action just seems to be much smoother than current mfg. 0 -
