Colt Sporter 89-94ish
Essentially, I have this rifle http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=202575903#PIC.
Okay, here are my questions:
1. I'd like to separate the lower from the upper but, the darn things are affixed together by a... ah... well... a non-removable screw-type implement, for lack of a better word(s). Is there anyway to get the upper and lower apart, without causing damage to the rifle?
I'd like to use the lower receiver for an A3 type upper, so I can mount optics, close to the bore.
2. I'd like to put a collapsible stock on it, so my son can shoot the rifle too. So, anybody know if the buffer-tube is attached to the lower receiver, permanently?
3. Perhaps it would be easier to buy a new lower at the gun show, early next month?
I don't know... I guess I'd like to have options. Plus, if I can save a few bucks, that would be cool too.
PS, what was Colt thinking? Were they trying to be politically correct, thus protecting their government contracts?

It's a captive pivot pin. Partially swivel the upper forward, then push on the pin (with a non-marring object) from left to right. Do not attempt to remove it completely.
That's a nice looking rifle. Personally, I would leave it alone & start from scratch if I wanted to build a Mixed Parts Mongrel. But, it's your rifle, do as you please.

That screw will come out. Use the proper fitting screw driver, and lots of care. If I am not mistaken, that might be able to be replaced with the pushpin like the rear. You will need to use a dremel to remove the stake's on the castle nut to remove the buffer tube. You will need to replace the buffer tube with the carbine length buffer tube and spring.
Personally, if you live in a state where you can have new pre-ban type equipped weapons...states other than NY, then I would just get another rifle or lower all set up with the 6 posistion carbine stock. You might even consider a varmint upper...0 -
I'd just leave it as is. Buy a AR set up the way you want it.
Most likley less expencive in the long run.0 -
Yeah, before I posted, I thought that buying a new lower, or two, would probably be the best thing to do. However, considering the fact that I don't know everything, nor will I ever, I figured I'd get some opinions.
There's a gun show in Phoenix, 3rd, 4th, and 5th, of next month, anybody going? Perhaps there will be some good deals? I'm thinking, possibly, a machined lower, billet. I don't know...0 -
RGuns has lowers for $65, as well as anything else you might need for a build.
