Correct Stock For 300 H&H Pre-64 M-70?
OK, I thought I had this figured out but now I'm confused. I'm in the market for an original stock for my circa-1959 Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 in 300 H&H Magnum. I thought the 300 H&H and 375 H&H guns where Winchester's only true "long action" Model 70s and that they required a stock designed to specifically fit the "long action." I also thought all other calibers--30-06, 270, 300 Win Mag--were classified as "standard actions." I've found several original Pre-64 stocks for sale on line and most claim they'll fit long actions "from 270 to 300 H&H Mag." Is that right? Will an original Pre-64 Model 70 stock off a 30-06, for example, readily accommodate a like-year Pre-64 300 H&H barreled action? Do I need to keep searching for a stock that came off a 300 H&H? I don't want the hassle of buying a stock on line and then trying to return it if it doesn't work. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Encyclopedia of Modern Firearms, Parts & Assembly by Brownell gives a part number of 3370 for the Regular Standard Grade stock and a part number of 3570 for the Regular 300 H & H Magnum stock. I believe different part numbers means the stocks are different. 0 -
I have a 1953 .30/06 and a 1956 .300 H&H. I'll try, in the next couple of days to see if they'll switch and, if not, why not. 0 -
Hmmm...I thought the only difference between the Winchester actions used for ctgs like the 270 or 30-06 and the long magnums (300H&H, 375H&H) was the absence of a striper bridge at the rear of the receiver and a small cut-out at the back of the front receiver ring to facilitate the longer ctgs. Oh ya, and the magazine. (stock cut out ?) 0 -
I finally got around to checking the .30/06-.300 H&H stocks. (To tell the truth, I forgot 'til now--sorry!) The .300 H&H barreled action dropped right in to the .30/06 stock. No difference in barrel contour or diameter. The only difference is the magazine box. That box is longer but not wider. The outside length of the '06 box is 3.505", while the H&H box is 3.677". So if you'd remove that much wood from the front of the magazine well, you'd be good to go. 0 -
Thanks, Ambrose, for all the effort you went through. In fact, I finally got my hands on a copy of Roger Rule's book yesterday and confirmed exactly what you stated. Action length is the same for an '06 and a 300 H&H, but the 300 H&H magazine box is longer, requiring about .5" of additional wood to be removed from an '06-length stock. I'm going to keep looking for an OEM take-off stock for my H&H, but will grab one off a '06-length gun if I get desperate. Thanks again for playing the shell game with your stocks and actions. 0 -
Jim,
Try Steve, phone #214-802-0592 he's a good source of pre 64 parts.
Jeff Lee phone # 972-790-0773 he's super hard to get ahold of, but he's the largest parts dealer in the southwest.
Hope this helps[:D]

Fairlane; Please be careful when removing that wood from an '06 stock. (You mentioned taking out a half inch.) You will note that the magazine box on your H&H, while locked at the sides and back, is free to move foreward (the '06 box is locked all around). The foreward part of the receiver bottom is milled away to make room for the longer box. You can imagine what kind of forces that are exerted under recoil on a full magazine to move that box foreward. So I would take out just enough wood to accomodate the longer magazine. 0
