Key question. Are you asking about a flash suppressor or sonic suppressor?

There are no sound suppressors made that would be effective on an M1a.

The above poster is wrong. If you dont believe me do a web search on M1A silencers and do the same on Youtube and see for yourself.

Running a silencer on an M1A can be very good and bad at the same time.

The bad is that the way the gas system works in the M1A it has a narrow window for acceptable pressures. At the very least you will need an adjustable gas plug for the gun if you plan on using it in semi auto. The second "problem" is mounts and sighting. The M1A uses an oddball size for the way the FH is mounted and there are only a couple companies making mounts for them. The other part of that is when you remove your FH you loose your front sight. This can be fixed by buying a Smith locking ring that has the sight mount on it.

For the good with the M1A you can shut off the gas system. IF you run in the closed position you can shoot any ammo you want without worry to the gas system. You will have to cycle for each round though. Another positive to is this you can load subsonic ammo and with the action staying closed it will be very quiet.

There are several threads talking about this on Silencer Talk. I have been meaning to do one of my, but have just not got around to it. I have a silencer that will work already, just need a mount.

Interesting. I almost bought that one but then read some stuff about them being a decent can but for the money you could do better. I would love to hear more about it....

    Nwcid raises some good points.

The M14/M1A can be used effectively with sound suppression. The U. S. Army was the fist to do so with the XM21 and Sionics M14SS-1 sound suppressor in 1969. Agreed, you have to take steps to avoid damage to the gas system as mentioned above. That can be accomplished by various means: 1) shut the spindle valve 2) use an adjustable gas cylinder plug with the sound suppressor (AAC 762SD) 3) use a modified gas piston with the sound suppressor (M25 rifle with OPS, Inc. 12th Model) 4) use a sound suppressor with a vent (Sionics M14SS-1) or 5) use a sound suppressor that doesn't need gas system modification (SEI/Fisher M14DC).

Options for mounting the sound suppressor to a M14/M1A include: 1) Delta P Design threaded front sight base (designed to work with the Delta P Design sound suppressor, this may work with other suppressors too) 2) AAC Blackout 18T muzzle adapter (available for M1A) with a AAC 762SD suppressor and a SEI gas cylinder lock front sight 3) Smith Enterprise, Inc. DC Vortex flash hider with a SEI/Fisher sound supressor and a SEI gas cylinder lock front sight 4) Smith Enterprise, Inc. 5/8 " x 24 x 0.635 " threaded front sight base (may work with other suppressors, I'm not sure on this option) or 5) OPS, Inc. M14 DMR muzzle brake with an OPS, Inc. 12th model sound suppressor.

If you put a sound suppressor on your rifle, you could install a M3 breech shield to deflect the gas blowback from your face. The better solution, IMO, is to install a receiver three point scope mount and quality scope rings and scope. The scope mount will keep the gas blow back out of your face.

Thank you all for the information. I will pass this on so my customers does not jack up his rifle operating system.
