.223/5.56 ID?? cartridge marking???
Can someone tell me exactly what I have.
A bunch of ammo either .223 or 5.56
The case is marked L C 7 2 (not 100% of the 2 because alot are hard to read)
It comes in a metal strip with 10 rounds...2 strips to a cardboard cover
The metal strip is marked "BWN- ASSY 11010483"
Is it .223 or 5.56? Do you know the grains?
Thanks

Lake City Arsenal, 1972 produciton. Should be 55 grain, early type fmj. Stripper clips for loading M-16's through the open boltway? Someone must know more...I assume they will come along sooner than later... 0 -
LC72 is US military 5.56 NATO spec ammunition manufactured at the Lake City plant in 1972.
Those 10 rd. strips are standard milspec packaging.
If it's original (not reloaded) and FMJ it's 55 gr.

Stripper clips for loading M-16's through the open boltway? The 10 rd. strips are for loading magazines by use of a simple mag loading device ('charger'). This piece of kit came packaged one-each in a 7 pouch cloth bandolier that contained two ten round strips in a cardboard sleeve per pouch.0 -
LC 72 is the U.S. military ammo plant Lake City, manufactured during the Viet Name war in 1972. It would be the early military 5.56 ammo, I believe the bullet weight is 55 grains. 0 -
Thanks. Safe to shoot? Any precautions? 0 -
Should be fine, although a bit dirty by todays standards. Since it's FMJ, I would not worry about overspinning it in a modern, faster twist AR. Should be good fodder for what it is, i.e., I wouldn't ask it to be much of a ground hog cartridge as it is a little too tough a bullet to do proper damage. 0 -
Sounds like good fun target ammo or maybe behind the ears of a few hogs 0 -

None.
What you have is considered to be among the the very best as far as quality of manufacture - assuming this isn't remanufactured ammunition using LC cases.0
