UNIVERSAL CARBINE PROBLEM

That's a sign that the bolt is not fully rotated (in battery), a potentially lethal problem in Universal carbines.

The design of the USGI carbine is supposed to keep the firing pin from touching the primer if the bolt isn't in battery. However, poor quality in the manufacture of some Universals resulted in the defeat of this safety feature.

It should be examined by a competent gunsmith, who may or may not be able to correct the problem.

In any case, few commercial mags > 15 rd will function reliably in the carbine.

The GI carbine does the same thing with a weak return spring, puts a dent in the primer because the bolt is not completely rotated into position. Sometime this also happens when you have a bad magazine or are not using USGI magazines. The USGI carbine was also later modified with a magazine release that would help support the larger capacity mags, if you can get a look at the later mag releases and compare them to yours that could be part of the problem. If you can find a GI 15 round magazine give it a try, if it works you most likley have some cheaper reproduction magazines. If this is the dual spring carbine make sure you keep an eye on the slide where it is welded and if it has or starts to crack quit shooting it and either retire the rifle or find a new slide.

New spring(s) (some have two recoil springs) are in order, also replace that POS aluminum trigger housing with a solid milled or even the laminated sheetmetal GI one.

All the old aluminum ones seem to let the mags tilt at the front causing FTFs.

Most of the mags are GI. I bought 100 of the 15 round mags many years ago and gave him some of them. BTW they cost 50C each![:)]
