444marlin/410/judge
have a friend who loads 444 marlin as shotshells to use in a 410 and they do work. does this mean you could chamber a 444 marlin in a judge and shoot it???? once????

There should be a internal shoulder in the Judge cylinder to prevent any longer cartridge then the .45 LC from chambering. I had a Judge a number of years ago and tried both the 454 Casull and .460 S & W neither would chamber. Because of this internal shoulder full length brass cases will not extract, because they expand and lock up on the shoulder.
Anybody who would try to fire a loaded .444 Marlin in a Judge is brain dead, and get what they deserve.0 -
No.
It is possible to load .444 Marlin with powder and shot to .410 shotgun specifications, just like the old all brass shotshells of larger gauges.
HOWEVER, you must NOT shoot a .444 Marlin rifle cartridge in a .410 of any type. It is running at about three THREE times the chamber pressure of a shotgun shell and would demolish any .410 shotgun... or a Judge if you could cram it in.0 -
i agree. but i do have some crazy friends, if this persists i will have less. 0 -

Just because it MIGHT fit, does not mean it was meant for it, and will work. It will most definately explode the gun. To actually put one of those 444's in a Judge and pull the trigger, would be like dialing 1-800-BDF!(BIG DUMB F@%K)

Ya know, I'll bet a 600 Nitro Express cartridge will fit in a 20 gauge shotgun, so would it be a good idea to load up my Iver Johnson single shot and go elephant hunting? 0 -

Just make sure it has the stronger Damascus barrel(s) to be safe.
Now the OP gives me an idea: Use any 444 brass I might find and load some shot shells for use in a single shot break open 410, if the fit. Hmmmm would need over power and over shot wads and a way to roll crimp the hull. Then market them as a snake load for a 444 Marlin. Could also load them with BP for the 444 Marlin Cowboy shooters.0 -

If you can get the cartridge to fit (and you say you can), then you can probably get the round to go off.
But as mentioned earlier, 3" .410 shotshells operate at 13500PSI. Ordinary .45LC operates at 14000 PSI. .444 Marlin operates at 44000 CUP (which for this purpose we'll consider the same as PSI).
That's not very high for a RIFLE cartridge, but for a PISTOL cartridge, its way up there past .44 magnum territory into super-magnum pressures.
Since the Taurus judge is undoubtedly NOT built strong enough to handle that kind of pressure, even one shot with an ordinary .444 round will most likely explode the gun, destroying it, and posing a severe physical danger to the shooter and anything in the immediate vicinity.
Really, not a good idea to try this.
And I think you bring up an interesting point, albeit indirectly.
Because of the greater case volume, if you knew what you were doing you probably could load up a .444 cartridge to get significantly better ballistics than a .45LC, but at the SAME operating pressure.
The longer cartridge should also decrease the "free bore" (ie distance the bullet has to jump from the short .45LC case to the barrel rifling) and therefore increase accuracy.
Now, you'd have to be very careful with your chronograph and powder selection (you'd probably want to use the high volume "trail boss" powder), but you might actually be able to SAFELY significantly improve the performance of the Taurus judge by using 444 brass as a basis for custom loads.
The problem I see is that the .444 case is slightly tapered and it will probably expand to fit the Judge chamber. If the case doesn't split it might lock up on the little "shoulder" that's in there to prevent you from running .454 Casull ammo in your Judge. But maybe you could get away with fireforming the .444 cases to the Judge, creating a sort of .444 Judge wildcat.0 -

I think 444 Marlin brass, which holds a .429 diameter bullet, although long is too thin and would stretch side to side when fired. I think 460 S & W brass would be a better choice because it's stretched 45 Colt brass - I think it would fit very well.0 -

What do you mean by, "460 S&W brass is just 45 Colt brass stretched" ? HAWKSHAW0 -

Just that it is of the same external dimensions but longer.0
