1911 Recommendations
I've never owned anything but 9mm, .380ACP and .22 pistols but I am considering a 1911 because those who love them really, really love them.
What would the experts recommend?
I don't want a show piece or over priced FTF type.
I want a good, solid pistol that accurately represents all that is a 1911 for a decent price.

SERIES 70 Colt Gold Cup if you want adjustable sights. 0 -
The Kimbers or Para's or Springfields are good choices.
Some of the lower end makers I would stay away from.0 -
I'm looking at the Springfields and they look pretty nice.
I really like the green ones.
Another question:
4" or 5" barrel?0 -

If you want "all that is a 1911" then get a Colt series 70. Used ones are still not crazy expensive, and they're only continuing to appreciate.
5" barrel unless you want to carry it concealed.
If so, you might also consider an alloy frame gun, since even the all steel 4" bbl'd guns are pretty heavy.0 -
for the money the springfield is not a bad gun,but it is not made in the u.s,most have mim parts and a two piece barrel.kimbers and para are fair.lots of low end-citadel/armscorp ,rock island, etc. types but they are what they are,you truly get what you pay for . wanna real 1911 to start with go with a 70 series colt-replace the collet bushing and you are on the right path.they hold their value are u.s. made no mim parts, and a decent start into to the ever complex but exciting world of 1911.welcome! 0 -
swampgut....now is a great time to buy a gun as the market is down and there are real buys out there for a person who does some shopping. If you want a 1911 why not buy the real deal...a Colt 1911 while the market is good[^]. There are several really good clones of the Colt 1911 but they are what they are...clones. Get the real deal, shoot it, take care of it, and watch it appreciate like the Colt that it is. I echo the suggestion of buying Series 70 1911A1 or pre-1970. A Gold Cup would be nice. Several have gone on the auction side of GB rather reasonable in last several months...but your "decent price" will be in the $1k range. I love my pre-1970A1 bb model. Shoots a heck of a lot better than these old eyes, and going to go to my oldest grandson![^] Good luck in your selection[:)][:D] 0 -
Colt 70 series or pre 70s pistol.
"There can be only one!"

if your ready to drop $1,000 plus,go for it!!i say you don't,thats just my opinion... 0 -
An Auto-Ordinance will probably be the right fit. Reasonably priced, accuracy on par with pistols 3 times the price. Reliable enough for CCW as long as you keep with JMB's recipe for hardball. 0 -
I bought a Taurus PT-1911 when they first came out. I was also in the market for a 1911 and did'nt want to spend a ton of $$$. I was first looking at the Kimber but Taurus put a lot of the custom features into their first 1911. The trigger on the one I bought is Great and the gun overall is a very nice shooter. If you look at one be sure to check the trigger, they had 3 in stock and the other 2 seemed to have a little creep.
I paid $499. New Time will tell how well it holds up.0 -
Go and buy one of the
basics, no frills.
Shoot it and have fun0
