Legality OF Owning LAW Tube w/M190 Subcal Device
Hello to all. Hope this is the correct forum area for my question. Can anyone comment on or direct me to information about the legality of owning an M72 LAW tube with the M190 subcaliber training device ? All responses will be greatly appreciated.

The expended tube is a curio...Nothing more than an empty container and totally unregulated. The M73 sub caliber rockets used in the device do not have a propellant charge of more than four ounces nor an explosive or incendiary charge of more than a 1/4 ounce so they are not by definition Destructive Devices under Federal law. The actual sub caliber training device when installed inside the LAW tube would be considered a functional firearm but since the tube measures about 36" extended it would not be considered a Short Barreled Rifle but would be subject to normal controls for firearms.
State laws are all over the place on these kinds of little rocket toys so you'd best find out what your state have to say about firing rockets before you trot out your new found toy and start blasting away with it!0 -
Many thanks, mark, for your informative post. Here's a slightly different take on the same question, which I posted on another website's forum:
The "destructive device" in your case would be either the LAW rocket itself or the 35mm rocket used by the M190. If you don't have either of those then you can't load either the LAW or M190 and you are perfectly OK and legal.
It's the same ruling behind this ATF FAQ on firearms, that the launcher isn't the destructive device for rockets or grenades:
Q: Are grenade and rocket launcher attachments destructive devices?
Grenade and rocket launcher attachments for use on military type rifles generally do not come within the definition of destructive devices. However, the grenades and rockets used in these devices are generally within the definition.
