Winchester 92 Duplicate Serial Number? or Change?
I recently sent a request to the Cody Firearms Museum for information on a Winchester 92. When the results came back, there were two listings for that SN. Checking the rifle, I realized I had sent the wrong SN, so I submitted the corrected SN, and this one also came back as a duplicate. When I ask the CFM about it they responded with the comment below. The information I received is listed below. Any clarification would be appreciated, which may be of interest to others. The Rifle is actually a W92 SRC 44.

The records are unclear whether there are two with that SN or that the carbine was changed. There is no return notation on the ledger but it doesn't specify a second gun either. There are another two or three on that page with the second record on 11-23-1898.

Texas Bear,
From the information that you give, I would speculate that those rifles originally left the factory as 44 W.C.F. carbines in May of 1898, and were returned to the factory on November 23rd, 1898, to be changed over to the 38 W.C.F. rifle configuration.
Do you have any pictures of the rifle/carbine?
I am sure that Bert will be along with a very educated spin to put on this, soon.

I have one of these and it is still a W92 SRC 44 WCF. 0 -
Without the benefit of actually looking at the ledger entries myself, I suspect that it is a case of duplicate serial numbers. I say this because your gun is still in the SRC configuration. 0
