Wards Wester Field 22 Rifle
When my grandfather died, I inherited his 22 rifle. It is a Wards Western Field No.45 22 S-L-LR patent pending
It is a bolt action with adjustable sights. This thing is a tack driver! There is a mossberg peep sight on it.
There is a magazine that loads from the bottom with a knurled knob in front of it.
The stock is wood, badly scratched, with no markings on it. There is no serial number that I can find.
I am wondering if I keep this for the sentimental value (and small game hunting) or do I need to insure it as well?

Unfortunately "Store Brand" .22 rifles as you describe don't have much in the way of value. I would treasure it and enjoy shooting is as it was your Grandfathers. The lack of serial number shows that it was manufactured and sold prior to 1968, most likely by Mossberg. 0 -
Thanks. I agree with that, since it has a Mossberg peep site on it.
I thoroughly enjoy the rifle -- I generally carry it whenever I am walking around my property. It is a tack driver and very useful for small game.
The fact that it was my grandfather's makes it priceless and the only question was whether it needed to be insured. Sounds like it does not, so I can skip that hassle.

You may have a Mossberg Model 42. Does it look like this?

Yes Spider, it looks almost exactly like that! I would upload photos, but I can't figure out how. The front sight on yours looks a bit different, but the rest looks the same.

There are usually some slight variations between factory issues and "store brand" guns but I'm glad we were able to identify it for you. The Mossberg Model 42 was made from 1935-1937. There isn't much collector value (less than $200) but the value to you is priceless. Take it out hunting and target shooting. I'm sure that's what grandpa would want! [:)]0
