In my opinion you would be $$$ ahead to remove the scope and sell this outfit as TWO different items. The scope will be High interest and most likely bring almost as much as scope and rifle combined. With out pictures "SEE STICKY' on top few post on this forum " "HOW TO POST PICTURES" we would only be guessing .A custom Mauser in 22/250 could be anywhere from $200.00 to $1200.00 depending on condition and quality of workmanship on building the rifle.

EDIT As I read it the 1909 is the serial of the scope one of between 1000 and 2775 as stated by Hawk C. It has nothing to do with what kind of rifle it is mounted on. . This poster IMHO is very lucky that he did not take to local dealer or gunshow to sell . someone with Obama ethics would have offered $750.00 for the whole rig. [V]

I'd remove the scope from the rifle like perry shooter said, unless in the very rare possibility that it was used in service on the rifle mentioned, and I've never heard of such a combo, myself. I've seen these type scopes sell from the mid $3000.00 range to over $6000.00. A good place to auction it off would be right here on Gunbroker.

I found this on the Olive Drab board:

    USMC Model 1941 Sniper Rifle
The USMC had their own sniper rifle based on the Springfield, in addition to the M1903A4 Springfield Rifle for snipers adopted by the Army. Building on successful experience with modified M1903 Springfields dating back to World War I, in November 1943 the USMC adopted an M1903-A1 mounted with the Unertl 8x telescopic sight for sniper use. The scope was marked "USMC SNIPER" and serialized from 1000 to 2775. The scope came with a Micarta carrying case.

If this checks out, you have a great catch. The rifle might be ordinary or nice, but a USMC scope off a 1941 is going to be valuable.

    Willishill,

    Welcome to the Forum!

I'll reiterate and maybe clarify some if I may. Anytime you see a J. Unertl scope it has HIGH INTEREST. If it's on a military rifle original to it's period, the interest goes up exponentially. However, in this case, what you have for a rifle is what sounds to be a 1909 Argentinian. Which was an outstanding rifle as a basis for a custom. From what I gather it looks and also shoots outstanding. The problem here for the value of the rifle is it's not original. If there is any provenance on who did the custom work on it, it could help the value. Otherwise, it could be just another very good shooting, nice looking rifle that won't bring what it is truly worth.

So, that's why the response of separating the two. But if you do separate them, make sure if you can that you get the bases for the scope as well. Clear up into the fifties and even sixties bases were kind of custom made and some of the longer scopes, such as Unertls, had to have (a) custom base(s) made and dovetails cut in the rifle to fit them to the rifle. If you split them make sure you have everything down to the dovetail.

    -good luck, hope that helps.

Unertl target scope bases are still an industry standard.
Brownells and Champion's Choice sell several heights.
Just last year I bought some to convert my Army Surplus CMP Kimber 82G from whatever oddball they used to Unertl.

Steve Earle makes a wide variety of bases for Unertl and Fecker outside adjustment scopes, even the old standard Springfield height.

The condition of your Unertl USMC Sniper Scope is going to determine what it brings on auction. The following link shows where one of these type scopes, along with a canister, recently sold for about five grand. A couple of years ago, one in this condition with such a canister would likely have brought another $1200 to $1500, give or take. Note the quality of the pictures in the subject auction, that there was No Reserve, and the starting price was $0.01, the strategy of which generated a lot of bids resulting in a very good price considering the economy we have today.

    Good luck!

Added: Note the 10 day auction time, too. And, don't forget to remove the scope bases from the rifle as previously mentioned, and include them with the screws in your auction.
