Feed problem in Itl. 38 rifle 7.35
I have a mod. 38 Italian 7.35 rifle which uses those 6rd. clips. The fixed sight is a pain but using proper 'Kentucky elevation' it is really quite accurate. I shoot reloads made with original mil. brass (I altered primer pocket to take lge. rifle primers) and original FMJ military bullets. (I lucked into them thru an old gun shop clearence sale). I load to specified length. My problem is the rounds won't feed, instead of entering the feed ramp, they nosedive into or jam into the mag. well! After a lot of cussin' I found if I insert the rounds into the clip not all the way to the rear, do not snap into ridge at rear of clip; they feed great!! But since they aren't snapped in the rear real care must be taken in handling, as the rounds will just slide out. Is there some explanation for this? I have 5 clips, 3 brass & 2 black steel and they all work the same.

There is a follower and follower spring in the magazine that forces the cartridges upwards from the en-block clip as it's held stationary in the magazine.
IMHO, either the follower is binding on the clip or there is loss of tension on the follower spring.
Because of the design Mannlicher magazine with it's en-bloc clips, there has to be very substantial upward pressure on the follower to insure proper feeding.0 -
another possiblity is you are not resizing the base of the brass enough, most full lenght resizing dies don't resize the base of the case back to original dimentions. try a box of the new hornady ammo if you can find some. 0 -
Maybe you just need a longer overall length for your loads? Be certain they'll still chamber of course, being a military rifle it probably has a generous chamber and long leade - I'd try seating the bullets not quite so deep. 0 -
1. Follower should be quite hard to push down with your thumb. Weak spring? Check the follower area where it touches the lowest round..any sign of alteration?
2. A loaded clip, once inserted, should have no fore-and-aft movement in the magwell, and the clip should have almost no vertical movement. After insertion, check the clip carefully, as you push the top round out of the clip with the bolt. If there's noticeable forward motion to the clip as the bolt is moving forward, the cartridges are angling downwards, due to bolt pressure on the rear. You may have to take a close look at the magwell, or drive out the little button assembly, and see if there's no gunk built up that would prevent full engagement with the back of the clip once the clip inserted. Check top of follower/face of release button for wear. Hope I helped. Joe0
