Bert and the others will be along after a while.

I think the barrel was shortened and rebored to get a 23.25" .45-70 marked like that. Engraved and reblued of course. But why did they put prettied up metal like that back in the old skinned up stock?

    Hello,

It is EXACTLY a non-factory altered Model 1886 Sporting Rifle. It was serialized in late June of 1895.

The barrel and magazine tube have been cut down from original length, the barrel has most likely been rebored or rechambered, it has been engraved by somebody other that a factory engraver (though someone with decent talent), and it is almost totally refinished (everthing except the stocks).

The value is what ever someone wants to pay for it. In the collector arena, it has very little value.

So you think the caliber is something other than .45-70? or that it has been re-calibrated TO .45-70?

    Thanks for all this info!

It most likely started life as something other than 45-70, but has been rebored, and rechambered to 45-70. It is most likely a 45-70 NOW.

But do a chamber cast to be sure...45-70 in something not quite chambered in 45-70 might make for a bad day. Nice looking...too bad it was so extensively redone.

Can't tell from photos, but almost looks as if it was cut down from breech end and rechambered. Original Winchester barrel with non-factory caliber marking.
