Start out at 25 yards. Get it on paper then move out another ten yards. Oh, and get some buddies to help you. After about 6 shots you'll probably be ready for some relief.

Seriously, once you sight it in at 25 yards then fifty to settle it in and you should be good to go. I doubt you'd hit anything much past 50 yards without a lot of practice and the 454 don't lend itself to that chore very easily.

Hello Sir I take it you will be hunting Larger game if you are shooting a 454 Casull . If you sight the pistol in at 50 yards then you will be within one or 2 inches at any range less then 50 yards Most pistol shooters can't shoot within a 3 inch circle at 50 yards so IMHO the 50 yard zero would be reasonable. Distance to zero a Pistol for big game that has a kill zone of at least 6 inch circle.IF you are going to try to hunt at longer ranges then ZERO at the longest range that you can hold a group within a 6 inch diameter circle.

I carry a Ruger SRH .454 with 7.5" barrel. I have not scoped it but that didn't keep me from dropping a buck at 65 yards without a rest, a doe at 125 yards with a rest, and a few others along the way.

If your handgun is accurate I would line the scope up just like I do my slug guns. 2" high at 50 yards. You can hold on deer size game to 100-115 yards without worrying about bullet drop, and can stretch it further with practice to learn your gun and ammo's drop. This can take a while with a .454, 12 rounds out of mine and my elbow hurts [:)]

Yes it takes practice and we shouldn't shoot further than we are capable. But this caliber out of an accurate handgun is capable of more than most shooters. If you load some heavy rifle bullets with better BC it should do even better. I haven't tried that yet but give me time (I just bought a reload press).

Edit: I hope you have that scope mounted well, the 454 recoil has to be hard on weak set ups.

I have just scoped a revolver with 8" barrel for hunting. I'll be shooting a 260 grain bullet with 1800 fps mv. What is a practical distance for scope sight-in? Am I off-base at 50 yds.?

    Thanks.

50 yards will work just fine.

If you pistol shoots Long Colt start with it to get use to the pistol and set the scope up. When you feel comfortable with the Long Colt and how it handles. Load and fire your .454 adjust your scope. +1 on the 100 yard plus shots with the right ammo and a study hand.

Your not even close to off base at 50 yards with a Casull, I shoot mine to over 100 yards with Express sights into a 6 inch circle from time to time... If I were to scope mine I would be sure to sight it dead on at 100 yards and then figure out where it was shooting at 50 and 150 yards and go from there....
