Check a local gun store that sends in guns for repair. They have normally bought in bulk from Uline or others and MIGHT be willing to part with a generic box for a small sum.

    a) Your local gun shop may have one they don't need.

    b) Go to a store that sells mops/brooms. These come from the manufacturer in long, skinny boxes. Problem with them is they are not strong so get two, one bigger than the other. Put the rifle in the smaller box, then put the smaller box into the larger one.

    c) Buy one of the inexpensive, hard plastic gun cases (about $15?). Put the rifle in there and wrap the case in brown paper so it doesn't scream "Gun case, steal me!"

go to a moving place. My local one is a franchise called the packaging store. When they ship households they have various sized boxes and mine also sells them. That's where I get all mine. They are never the perfect fit For a single long gun they sell a telescoping length box that is 10 X 8 X whatever you want. Plenty of bubble and it works great . About 10 bucks for the box. It's a uline box

Plus 1, on the inexpensive plastic rifle cases. They are certainly sturdy enough for shipping and wrapped in brown paper and nylon strapping tape are pretty secure.
