Browning Buckmark .22 magazine question

Does not fit meaning it does not go in the gun?
Meaning it does not lock in?
    Meaning it does not function?
Meaning it fits in, locks in, and functions but just hangs down further?

There are 2 styles of mags but I am not sure they make both still. I have some that are not only flush fit with the bottom but actually are slightly recessed in the grip. The down side to this is that it can be hard to get the mag to lock in unless done just right.

The other style has a "base plate" that hangs out just slightly below flush making it easier to lock into the gun.

I worked on a recent Buckmark with similar problems. It's not so much with the magazines rather the the magazine safety the recent Buckmarks are equipped with.

The currently made Browning magazines with the large base plates will sometimes hit the bottom of the grip without disengaging the magazine safety. You have to either get one of the old style magazines, or file the upper surface of the baseplate so it won't hit the bottom of the grip.

A more radical fix is to remove the magazine safety, which would create legal liability problems if their was ever a ND causing death or injury.

Thanks for the input, let me clarify....the "new" magazine (from Cabelas) will not go all the way into the magazine well. It appears that the base plate is preventing the magazine from going "up" far enough into the grip to engage the magazine release/lock. As a result, it will not feed/function properly, nor will it lock into place properly.
    Thanks again.

IMHO, if you can't return the magazine to Cabelas for a refund? Very carefully file the upper surfaces of the base plate so that the magazine will be able to seat correctly and the magazine catch will be able to engage.

I bet he has a Browning Challenger model and not a Buckmark, the Challenger magazines were different and will not work in a current Buckmark.

It's easy to tell the difference, the BuckMark magazines have a notch cut in the right side about 1/3rd of the way from the top for the magazine latch to engage. The old Challengers didn't have this notch, because the magazine latch was on the bottom of the grip. It engaged the base of the magazine to secure it in the pistol.

No, it is a Buckmark. It has the notch, on both. it is just different at the bottom. see the pix if it helps this is the "original/older magazine.......browning_buckmark_early.jpg and the replacement....brown_buckmark.jpg

I guess I sorta answered my own question, there surely are 2 different designs for the magazines. I guess I was really looking to determine if the "New" style was designed to be interchangable with the older models? Or if anyone else ran into this situation. Thanks again!

I have a 25 year old BuckMark in like new condition (first gun I've ever bought). I wanted an extra magazine, so bought a new one in the original Browning packaging at a gun show. It fits my pistol fine, but the bullets don't feed right and it jams every other shot or two. When I called Browning, they said I'm SOL. "Try and find an old style magazine." Does anyone have an old style magazine (or two) they'll sell? I'll trade you the new style I have if your pistol can use it. Just to confirm what is writen by others, the new style has a foot that sticks out the bottom, and the old style doesn't. Other than that, they appear to be identical. DaveAdams@TampaBay.RR.Com
