I saw one of these at the local gun shop today. I'm interested in getting one because I think they're neat and I'm also quite fond of shooting the 7.62x54R. Can any of you guys give me some info on it. What should I look for? Problems with them? It was in very nice shape for a surplus weapon. The guy wanted $500, which is a tad less than the others I've seen around. The Blue Book lists it at $365 in 100%. Is this realistic?

Do you know any local machine shops? Might take it to them. Without external barrel dimension prints could be a little bit of trial and error.

The problem finding someone to make a barrel for the SVT-40, is cutting the chamber neck flutes. Without them, the gun won't extract the case. The muzzle end has a left hand metric thread for the muzzle extension too. "IF" you could find someone to make one, you would have more in the barrel, than you do in the rifle.
Rumor is, CAI had two containers full of parts sitting in the Ukraine. Import red tape, and not paying off the right mafia people, ended that venture. Shortly thereafter, Marstar of Canada had rifles and parts.
Marstar would probably be the only place to find one.

It pains me to say this, but you may want to part it out. I would
normally never do that to a military gun , and I DO have a fondness for 38's and 40's, but it may not beworth it, even for such a valuable milsurp rifle. Check the parts market, and if favorable, use the revenues toward a functioning shooter.

That's not a bad point! I know I have seen a few barrelled actions for sale here in the past...you never know. If it was operable and the chamber/throat is trashed, as long as the gas system didn't take a hit then you would have all the parts needed. Check head space if you do it though.

I was going to ask what the barrel problem was, and read your other post in GD first.
You don't need a barrel, the rifle needs a good cleaning!
The SVT has a simple, and at the same time, complex gas system. It ALL has to be clean, and within tolerance for the split second timing of collapsing the case neck for extraction, and the bolt unlocking and cycling back for extraction and ejection.
Start with a chamber burnish, then use a dental pick and clean the carbon out of the chamber flutes. These have to be clean for the gas pressure to collapse the spent case for extraction.
Remove the gas piston/cylinder assembly, give it a good cleaning, then check for clearance. Turning up the setting when it's worn out, throws off the timing between the case neck collapse, and the bolt cycling back for extraction. This usually results in a stuck case, broken extractor, or the case being ripped in half.
The gas adjustment valve needs to be carbon free, and when set at any given setting, the index marks have to line up. A setting of 1.2 or 1.3 should eject and cycle any military surplus lightball.
Brass cased ammo is much better to use, but a rifle in proper working order will cycle steel cased ammo just as well.
