If I would hazard to give my opinion I would say that the engraving was done many years ago[:)]However with that said I do not believe it was done by Factory or even a very good skilled person . the animals look almost Child like to me and the rest looks sort of crude[:(]. It would be a nice shooter in Cowboy action matches but IMHO FAR from being a high end collector item. A factory letter IF available would be the only way to know.

Factory or not, a lot of buyers would love to own an engraved Model 1866 Winchester. As it's likely .44 rimfire, ammo would be very difficult to find.

Look carefully at the dots in the pattern. Some of them overlap onto each other and onto the main design.
There is no way this would occur in either Winchester or Colt factory engraving of the 1850 thru 1870's period.

That is the ugliest dog I have ever seen. The deer is nearly as bad.
I think Winchester could do better.

It most definitely is not Winchester factory engraving.

Louis D. Nimschke was the primary engraver of Winchester firearms during the 1860 - 1870 timeframe, and his work was simply superb.

I guess they had to practice engraving back then too. Its just to bad they did it on that gun.

    Agree - it looks old.
Back then - who knew it would be a White Buffalo ?
I still would like it in my collection ![:)]
