I have a Mdl 700, 30-06 BDL with a 20" bbl and a five digit serial number (86XXX). Doesn't look like a cut down. Bought it used about 1980. I haven't hunted or shot it much since 1990. No holes on the side of mine. Always wondered why it wasn't 22 or 24" bbl.

20" barrels were offered in 6MM Rem, 243 Win, 270 Win, 280 Rem, 30/06 and 308 Win. Six digit serial numbers run from @ 64-68.

ALL of the "VERY EARLY" (NON-MAGNUM) Model 700's came with 20" barrels. Both my dad and brother-in-law purchased some of the FIRST 700's made...both in 30-06 one was an ADL (Blind Magazine), the other was a BDL...they both had 20" barrels. To my knowledge, these were the "standard length" 700's...NOT carbine versions! I cannot tell you when they switched to 22" standard length barrels for the "Non-Mags". I believe both guns had sights.

David is exactly right, the early standard calibers came with a 20" tube. I have a 700 BDL in 7MM Rem Mag that was built in June of 62, first year of production. Being a magnum it has a 24" barrel. I also have a 243 ADL manufactured in 65 that has a 20" barrel.

I too have a 700 ADL, 30-06, with a 20" barrel. They didn't make too many of them and didn't make them for too long. The short barrel makes it easy to handle.

There's actually a lot of Remington turn bolt collectors out there and John Lacy wrote them a great book for them back in 1987. Too bad he hasn't updated it since the original copies are running $150 or more at Amazon. But the book verifies the 20" barrel 700's and a lot of other scarce and desirable 700/721/722/725 etc variants.
