sabot headspace?
just bought a savage 220 slug gun...shoots 2 3/4" or 3" shells...only 50 fps difference between the two with the recommended accutips...a little research doesn't seem to show much accuracy differnces between the 2, shouldn't the 3" be much more accurate due to a tighter headspace if nothing else?? thanks again!

I assume you are referring to the new 220 bolt action with rifled barrel? Headspace is not the correct term but rather chamber length would be the issue. I would assume that putting the sabot closer( 3in shell) to the rifling would increase accuracy by lessening free travel of the sabot with the 2 3/4 in shell. But this would only be a assumption, actual testing would prove results, there are many other variables, recoil and barrel vibration for one. The shorter shell may allow the sabot sleeve to conform more evenly to the gauge before encountering the rifling, this is all speculation, you need empirical testing to confirm. Fortunately they sell slugs in 5 pack so you can do a lot of sampling. Remember the sabot Savage recommends may be produced by them. Also there is slug performance once it gets there, sometimes you give up a little accuracy for effectiveness.
Let us know what testing you do so others will have a bench mark to go by.0 -
Hi Jag,
I do believe the term you are looking for, is free bore, meaning the distance the projectile has to jump from the starting posistion to the lands on the rifling. In theory, with the 2 3/4 inch Vs. the 3 inch, you would have about 0.250" more free bore with the 2 3/4 inch. That is not counting for difference in the slug or wad itself, or the hull.
The only way you can truly know the difference in accuracy is to try it. I know the Hornady SST is one that everyone is raving about, in muzzle loaders as well. I don't believe that Savage manufactures its own ammunition yet.

sorry, when I said accutips, I thought that was synonomus with remington, they recommend those and federal barnes expander...supposed to be the most accurate box slug gun with the exception of tar hunt custom or similiar...everything I read didn't show much accuracy difference between the 2 3/4 and 3"...it was just a generic observation likening it to a rifles headspace, ...critical for accuracy...supposed to be 1 1/2 moa with recommended ammo...thanks guys! 0 -

Sounds like you got caught up in hype because all of the manufatures produce a sabot they call "CAPABLE" key word of 1 1.5. at 100 yards.0 -
HEADSPACE on a shotgun is controlled by the RIM. Just like any other rimmed or belted (the belt being just a thick rim) cartridge. Period, end of discussion.
HEADSPACE on a rimless bottleneck round is controlled by the distance between the base and a diameter on the shoulder.
HEADSPACE on a rimless straight round (IE 9mmPara, 40 S&W, 45 ACP etc) is controlled by the length of the case (base to mouth).
HEADSPACE has NOTHING to do with the overall length of the round, bullet jump to the lands or any other thing you can think of.
Buy several brands, types and lengths of slug loads and take them out for group testing. YOU have to determine which one YOUR gun prefers.0 -

this is not a claim of the sabot maker, its a claim of several people/posters actual results0
