need help to identify an English bolt-action 270
I recently inherited an older bolt-action 270. The only marks I can find on the gun are a "Made in England" stamp on the reciever, "270" stamped on the top left of the barrel near the reciever along with a crown over "BNP" stamp. On the side of the reciever covered by the stock is a four digit serial # (I assume) This number is also stamped on the underside of the bolt handle along with another crown over "BNP" mark.

Your images did not appear for me, and we need those to make an informed apprisal of the rifle you describe. Note there is a "sticky" at the top of the topics column that describes how to achieve this. There were a number of English makers, and the 270 chambering at least dates it to not befor the introduction of that cartridge. Other than that, and the British Nitro Proofs you mention, I can't be of much help. 0 -
Still no luck...sorry. 0 -
Are there integral (all-of-one-piece) scope mounting dovetails machined into the top of the receiver? If so, then the rifle is a Birmingham Small Arms (BSA) model.
Some of these were also sold in the US under the Herter name.0 -
here are some more pics

That rifle is a Herters BSA U9. They where manufactured by BSA in England and imported by Herters, a large sporting goods wholesaler. Value is about $350-$400.
