Hard recoil making scope mounts fail???
I have a Savage smokeless muzzleloader with a scope. I have had a problem with the scope mounts since I got it several years ago. The first time I had the problem, the scope fell off while shooting. I chalked it up to no lock-tite on the threads locking the ring to the base and becoming loose as I shot. I re-mounted the scope with lock-tite. A few days ago, same thing. Three shots and the scope fell off. The ring screws were still tight when I had to loosen them to remount the scope. I tighened the crap out of them and fired a couple more shots. The scope was moving forward but I caught it before it was anywhere near falling off. I used a punch to put a couple small dimples on the base to help the ring bite and re-mounted the scope. Three more shots and the scope had moved forward about 1/16 to an 1/8 of an inch. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to keep my scope from moving? I'm out of ideas. Thanks

What kind of rings are you using? You may have .22 scope rings instead of weaver rings. If you are using weaver rings there is no way the ring could move forward or back because the weaver ring has a cross pin in the base. A .22 tip off ring don't. Just a thought.

Sliding in the rings is different from "falling off". I usually clean the rings and scope body with solvent on a rag. On a real kicker, I use red locktite on the joint also. I have had a muzzleloader scope slide w/o this treatment but never after doing this. 0 -
Im pretty sure they are weaver mounts. As for the sliding off, I wasn't watching and after a few shots, it slide enough to come off. I tried blue lock-tite and it still came off. I'll try the red. thanks! 0 -
is there a space between the top and bottom of the rings? meaning its not bottomed out, correct? 0 -
I think Winston Bode peged it.
Does your base have cross slots? If it does, the screws you are tightening should index in those cross slots and stop slipage.
Post a pic of the base/ring combination if you can.0 -
If you are using the rings that came with the package gun, the best place for them is in the garbage can. If it is the scope that came with a package, the same for it. Get yourself a set of Burris Signature Zee rings, or a standard type dovetail front, windage adjustment rear base, and the Signature rings, and be done with it.
