thanx snow...is it worth trying to replace the forearm? 0 -
I might have given you the wrong dope, thinking "Single Action". If your talking about a rifle or carbine it's known to collectors as the Colt Lightning. In the serial number range you have given it would date to the late 90's. If it's in descent shape IMHO it would be worth your while to get a replacement forearm. Doubt if their are any originals still around though. 0 -
sorry snow i wasn't very specific...yes its a colt lightning..thanx for all your help 0 -
Hello Parts like the forearm show up from time to time on all the auction sites I love these rifles and have a number of parts but don't think I have any Forearms left. Be aware thy are somewhat TRICKY to take apart. and one common problem is a part wears that can make these Rifles unsafe to Fire in a rapid fire Cowboy type shooting. To check for this condition With an UNLOADED] gun pull the hammer to full cock now try to work the action The forearm should be locked then after pulling the trigger the hammer should fall and this should unlock the forearm to function the gun to load the next round ig you had cartridges in the magazine. However if with the hammer back in full cock the forearm can be cycled the you need to correct this safety issue. Most Times this can be fixed without the need to replace parts but some times with heavy hard usage and a 100 year old gun the parts are so worn some parts need to be replaced.Unless you are mechanically inclined you will need to find a GUN-SMITH that has worked on Lighting rifles. They few and far between most of these guys retired 50 years ago. don't go modifying parts until you KNOW how each part interacts with ALL the other parts. Some parts are big $$$
edityou will be surprised at what your rifle is worth in shooting condition most likely start at $750.000 -
New wood and hard rubber reproduction forends are being made for your medium frame Lightning. Original parts will be hard to find. 0 -

Numrich has parts for your rifle and Wisner's reproduces some of the extractor and main spirng. You have to scroll down past what should
be the schematic on the Numrich page.

Ebay also lists new wood forends and stocks for Lightnings.
Google a little for other sources.
Note chambers for these guns will only accept the original form bullet.
They would have to be throated to accept bullets having driving bands
forward of the case mouth.
On originals shooting black powder, the compressed powder supports bullets from being driven back into the case while in their tubular magazines. This becomes a problem today with powder charges not filling cases and bullets crimping on bullet ogives in tubular magazines; especially thin walled 38 & 44-40 cases.0
