Luger Experts
Is there a good reference source for Luger serial numbers?
I was contacted by a lady wanting to sell her late fathers Lugers, she feels one of them is very valuable, has 2 magazines, a case and the officers name and service number on the holster. I have not looked at them yet, and she has very limited knowledge about fire arms. There are several other handguns listed in the estate, 8 Colts including a Python and a 1911 Gold Cup, but she feels this one Luger is the pick of the litter. Anyway, the two serial numbers for the Lugers are 8241 and 3444. I have no idea which one is which yet. If some one could lead me in the right direction it would be great. I won't get to look at them until next thursday, I'll take pictures and post them then. I'd like to have a little more knowledge befor I look at them, if thats possible.
Thanks for looking and thanks for the help.

what is a 1902 carbine worth, all original 90%+ finish, about a 12" barrel w/shoulder stock all matching #'s. 7.65 luger cal. 0 -
The serial numbers for German military Lugers are meaningless. There doctrine as far as serial numbering them was to restart the numbering after every 9999 Lugers were numbered. At that point they used a lower case letter starting with the letter a. Because of this there were many different Lugers with serial numbers 8241 & 3444. 0 -
Thank you rufe. Where can I find out more about them?

Hello Capt as stated the serial numbers them self are meaning less for the most part unless you might find one with the letters GL as part of serial [}:)][:0]. What is important is the maker the year and how rare a variation it is along with all matching numbers. This and condition etc. There are a number of good reference books. of which I have some but not all . I might be able to help. 0 -
Karl,
Thank you, your advice on value and condition has always been spot on. I'll do as much research as I can in the next week befor going to look at them. I do know almost every part is serial numbered, and as with any collector grade gun they all have to match.
Had an old friend in Hood River Or. that collected Lugers, was a fountain of knowledge, and taught me some about them. He passed 3 years ago, and now I know I should have paid more attention to what he said.
I'll send you pictures when I get them. There are 3 1903 Colt 380s in the estate also, if you want I'll send pictures of them.
Thanks for your time.
