Back round checks
Do the experts know what "delays" on gun purchases are based on?
I have had 3 for 3 in the last couple of months. 1 long gun 2 hand guns.
What, if anything, can be done to avoid them in the future? Is there a list of some kind that is "preferred customer" or just the luck of the draw.
Thanks

Here in Fl if the NCIS system is very busy they will delay and call back within an hour or so. More than that and it is something that required more investigation - some bad guy w/ a similar name, birth date, etc. Putting your SSN on the 4473 can help clarify, but it isn't required.
If you get denials, you can request a UPIN from the ATF/FBI. Basically, you have to be denied first, then appeal it and go thru a background check similar to getting your concealed permit, etc. You are then issued a PIN that fast tracks your call in.0 -
Delays are sometimes based on something on the NICS master file indicating that the applicant may have a disqualifying condition. It could either be criminal (conviction of a crime punishable by > 1 year in jail), domestic violence, or mental history.
The master file contains information submitted by the states, & all of them vary on the records they keep. Some are highly computerized, some not. Some keep a central registry of mental cases, some don't care.
If the applicant has a DUI, in most states it can be a misdemeanor for the 1st & 2nd conviction, & might be a felony for a 3rd. But, this often doesn't show up on the master file, so the feds have to ask the state for more information, resulting in a "delay".
There is no way that a customer can get get on a "preferred customer" list; Treasury tells unhappy customers that they should take their complaints to their home state government.

If you have a weird spelled last name and a CC Permit C&R LIC. and you put your SS on the 4473 form I have never had to wait over 30 Seconds[^][:D] 0 -

Last name is 4 letters I have a cc and put my ss number on form...not a traffic ticket in 10 years, no DUI. No wants, warrants, convictions
I did pick up a form to request a pin # today.
My dealer called today and said nothing has come back on a request for a long gun ( this was the 3rd week of waiting)...so I went and picked up my new AR AND the form.0 -

you should be able to pick after 3 days,if it is a delay and not a deniel.0 -
Yeah, after a set number of days, a lack of a "Denial" CAN be treated the same as a "proceed" by the store, IF they want to. Wally World in my town said their policy was not to complete a sale without an official "proceed". I had a temporary delay (several minutes) happen to me three times this year. Seems there is a felon on the run with the same name. After several minutes I got the "proceed", after the representative asked the store clerk to describe my height and weight. Seems the perp is a little twerp. I am about six inches taller and a hundred fifty pounds heavier. That was enough to get a "proceed" each time. [:D] 0 -
Thanks again gentlemem...as usual the experts came through. 0 -
wood_man,
Change your name to Felix Q. Fossidini III & they will not get you mixed up with anyone else's records again.
Seriously, a common name can raise flags 'till they sort out who is who by DOB, SS#, & ID#. The pin# is the way to go.
