I've used the Ruger semiauto and Marlin 1894 in 44 magnum.

Ruger had semiauto and leveraction carbines in 44magnum.

Marlin lever actions are easy to mount scopes on vs. Winchester 94's or 1892's.

So as not to take away from the 10 post limit. The Ruger 77 is made in 44 magnum and this is a bolt action. The receiver is grooved for scope rings and I believe rings come with the rifle.

You might look for something in the .357 Maximum , it's a really nice round in a Contender. I'm not sure if they make or made a rifle barrel in that caliber. I had one in a Contender pistol and took severalo deer in Texas with it. I also reloaded for it which helped a lot. I see there is a Ruger no.1 that is a rechamber from a .357 Magnum to a .357 Maximum on the auction side. It says you can still shoot .357 Magnums or .38 in it and there is nothing like the craftmanship of a No.1...beautiful guns...bull

    tjh427,

Hello, and welcome to the forums here on Gunbroker.com.

This subject was covered not to long ago on here, and if you use the search function to look it up, you can find it, but here is the link I provided.

It all depends on how much you want to spend, and what kind of platform you want to shoot. The Indiana law, set a minimum caliber, and maximum case length. It did not specifically say straight wall pistol cartridge.

Here is the link to the other topic we discussed this issue on recently.

Hope this helps. Personally if I were going to use a 44 Magnum, it would be a Marlin 1894, or a newer Winchester 1892 lever gun. The Marlin lends itself well for scope mounting.

I've heard about the .358 on the AR platform. I'm pretty sure I know of one and another has been ordered. Might be a little over my my budget but pretty interesting.

I hadn't seen anything chambered in the .357maximum I'll have to look into that.

I sure would like to find something in a bolt action but will probably end up with a Marlin lever action for short term.

How many times does one have to tell you, that they can not use rifle cartridges in rifles in Indiana?[:(!] They can use most any rifle cartridge in a handgun like the Encore, but only cartridges of a max of 1.625 inches in case length in rifles.

I agree that a levergun in .44 magnum would be a good choice here, especially if you didn't reload, since good factory ammo is readily available.

I don't know about exact cartridge length, but if you felt like you needed more power, Rossi makes a lever-action gun in .454 Casull called the Puma. That would also let you shoot .45LC if you liked.

I believe that law spurried the wilcat "358 WSSM". Better be a reloader, but would be a interesting rifle.

I know, little off topic. 44 mag would be the consensus I believe.

There is a Puma lever gun on the auction side in .454, it is a legal cartridge. The state may lengthen the cartridge minimum next season, you may want to check that before making a large investment.

You could also use a 500 S&W and there are some single shot rifles on the auction side in that caliber as well as 44 mag and 45lc.
