Browning a 5 tang screw

I need the screw size, threads and pitch, etc. for the Browning A 5 12 ga. tang screw (stock screw). Threads in receiver seem to be a little buggered and I need to retap/clean up the threads.

    The thread is 1/4"-40.

    I have the tap if you have need of it.

    Midway has a 40 tap for a few bucks as well.

    Thanks. What type of tap do you recommend as the action tube is at the bottom of hole, tapered or?

    That action tube would pose a problem. My tap is taper, and you will certainly want a plug tap.
    I had not thought of that since it has only been used on two Rem 11's, and the tube doesn't pose that issue on them.
    I hesitate to mention this, but if you are equiped to remove the action tube a taper tap will work. The reason I hesitate is that the tubes are often seized and can break when trying to remove them. repeated heating and soaking with Kroil or PB Blaster may free it enough for removal.
