1891 argentine mauser sniper
looking for information on 1891 argentine mauser sniper varient. I have a rifle I aquired from a friend of mine who had it for I believe over 40 years, He was never able to find out any info, so Im giving this a try. My argentine has a plate factory mounted to the left of the receiver inlaid into that portion of the stock, held into the rifle by 3 machine bolts two to the rear of the plate one to the front, there is a hole that is machine threaded for an additional bolt or knob directley below two wings that are part of the plate, it looks as though it was made for a scope mount that would slide up and down, similar to a civil war type mount, there also a dovetail cut out on an additional band mounted to the barrel in front of the top wood hand guard, as though slotted for windage, any info would be greatly appreciated, thank you, Dave

Nothing in either Ball's, Mauser Book or Walter's "Rifles of the World" on Argentine Model 1891 snipers.
The plate mounted on your receiver does look like a pro job though. Doesn't appear to be something bubba did in his garage.0 -
thats because there wernt any. 0 -
The Argentine 1891 rifle with scope is addressed in Colin Webster's book, "Argentine Mauser Rifles 1871-1959, copyright 2003, pages 78-79.
Argentine 91 snipers have a side mounted SOM (French) 3x scope. Original scopes will have 'SOM', 'RA', and 'Paris' markings.
Less than 500 produced, and most of those had the scopes and mounts salvaged to use on the 1909's.
The only ones I've heard of are museum pieces.0 -

The 1909 Argentine sniper rifle in Ball's book has a German made scope with what appears to also be a "High-Turret" German Mount. Completely different then the side mount on the 1891 pictured.0
