COLT
I bought a Colt New Service at the auction the other day( really legaly stole it)[:D] in 45 long colt, serial number 319xxx, dates it to 1923. My question is that someone shortened the barrel and put a ramp on it and now it looks like a Python on steriods[:0] Was this something that was done a lot back in the 30s,40s,50,???????[}:)][}:)] Any info on this pistol greatly appreciated[^][^][^]

Not a Colt "expert", they'll be along soon enough, but those modification sound typical for what I understand was common practice "in the day". King Gun Sight, (in California?) did a lot of this work. It would be great if you knew who did the work. For example a King job would be worth a lot more than a shade tree special.
md brings up an interesting point. Pictures? Do you have any?
(My dad had a couple of small Colts with the front of the trigger guard "missing" but he had done the work himself. Supposedly a little faster to get the finger on the trigger. Wouldn't do it myself. On those I've seen the trigger guard ends just forward of the lower end of trigger "finger" and is absent all the way up to the frame.0 -
There was a guy in the 20's (as I remeber) by the name of Fitzpatrick or Fitzgerald that would shorten the barrels on colts and remove the front of the trigger guard. He called them Fitz Specials. Is your trigger guard missing? 0 -
Skeeter Skelton was cutting off and resighting guns like that up into the 1970s. Not an uncommon practice throughout the first 2/3 of the century. 0 -
The trigger guard isn't cut away, just shortened barrel and ramp with new front sight, really nice crisp action and timing to this pistol. 0
