30-06 hunting ammo for deer
Does anyone have any sugestions as to what would be a good ammunition to use for whitetail deer in 30-06 cal. I would prefer to stay with the 165gr bullet weight. I've had this rifle for a while now but haven't used it in a number of years. The last ammunition I used was winchester power-point. I know there have been alot of changes from manufactures in regards to bullet advancements in recent years. The problem is I haven't kept up on this information. So any suggestions in regards to something that would not only be effective but accurate as well would be helpful. I would be using this in a bolt action rifle if that matters. Thanks in advance

I decided to try some of the federal 165gr fusion. The price was within reason as compared to others. Anyone have any experience or comments about this ammunition. I put this out under the same title. For some reason it said that the topic was locked. Anyone know why this would happen 0 -
With deer and the '06 (IM-ever so-HO) you really don't need to worry about advancements in bullet design. Power Points, Remington Corelock, or just about anyone elses good bullet will work fine. Try 2 or 3 of what you can get your hands on and see what works best in your rifle.
There have been a lot new things in bullet design, solid hollow points, bonded cores, plastic tips, etc., but to the best of my knowledge there still ain't no such animal as a bullet that will reliably bust brush!0 -
You can not go wrong. If you are hunting in heavy brush you could go with a heavy grain to break thru branches and brush. 0 -
If you reload or have reloading available I suggest the 165gr Sierra Gameking, A boattail hollow point pushed by 47gr of 4895 powder. Expands well at all ranges, although it is a hollow point does not expand too rapidly or collapse driven at the velocity of the charge. I personally assisted is butchering many of the whitetails. Proven deer load, for over 15 years, by myself and all those associated with me. The bullet weight and design is accurate in a variety of rifles and barrel lengths. Longest kill 350yd, closest 15ft, directly below. 0 -
I have used a 180 core lokt for years when hunting woods with great success ,Now I have dropped down to a 150 psp core lokt a bit flatter shooting and real deadly on deer out past 200 yards . Bottom line is to try different brands of ammo and see what groups best in your rifle, IMO stick with the 150 pointed soft point [:D]
And I honestly feel that you do not need a premium bullet for white tail deer.....my 2 cents worth. Good luck0 -
165 gr PP is a very good round for a deer. If you want to try what's new and out there, check out ...

...esp the .210 gr Berger hunting VLDs, it has very high BCs for those longer shots.
Good luck and happy safe shooting/hunting.

If you study the ballistics table, you'll find the 150 Win Power Point is way behind the 150 Rem Corelokt in performance over 200 yards. I used the Rem 150's for many years making the longest range deer kill I've ever made. I now use 165 Nosler Ballistic Tips and will attest they are better performers at extended range than the 150 flatbase Corelokt. As for "breaking through branches and brush", I'd rather the bullet simply disintegrate if it hits brush instead of deflecting and causing a poor hit but that's just my opinion. The 06 is a heavy duty deer rifle and the kids call my old Springfield "The Buck Hammer" because it hammers them right down. 0 -

Pretty much anything. Seriously.
Some are going to shoot a little flatter, some will be more or less accurate, some will cost more, some will hit harder, some will hold energy better at extended ranges, but if its ANY big-name brand hunting type round it should be fine to kill a deer from a .30-06, so long as the hunter does his part, and keeps shooting distances reasonable.

Then do so.

Eh. . .
90% of it is where you put the shot.
10% of it is bullet.
If you like Winchester Power point then use it. I'd guess that more deer are killed every year by that load than any other commercial '30-06 round (and just because its easy to find and relatively inexpensive).
There probably are more accurate loads out there, but how accurate do you really need to be? Obviously more accuracy is better than less, but realistically it probably only matters if you are taking fairly long shots.
If you can hold a 6" group at 200 yards, and don't intend to take a shot past that distance, you're probably good to go.
Its more important that you are comfortable with how your particular gun groups the load than which exact one, I'd say.0 -
If the bullet hits even a twigg it will change the direction of flight. Saw it a documentary called "Fire Power" years ago. 0 -
Yup. no such thing as a "brush buster". I've seen my 400 gr .45-70 pushed off the paper by small twigs we set up 20 yds before the target.
Your familiar 165 gr. Power Points will do just fine.0 -
I use Remington 150 gr Corelokt and good bullet placement. They drop like a bag of cement. 0 -
I use 150 gr Barnes bullets that I load myself and I have used 130 gr also with vrey good results. The 130 or 125 gr. will drop them out to 200 yards like a sack of bricks. I have had many one shot kills with both in 30-06. It is ammazing how fast they drop when hit with either. 0
