Looking for a shotgun
I have never been much of a shotgun guy. However, that was the first gun I owned, my dad bought me a .410 New England Firearms shotgun. I am in the market looking for a pump or double barrel shotgun. I'm mainly looking for wood grain, something that has a great appearance with good made parts. I really don't know much about shotguns. I'm not interested in a Remington 870 or 1100. I'm looking something like a Smith and Wesson or Ruger. I have about $350 to spend. Looking for a used one. Does anybody have any ideas?

S&W shotguns were not great, and that's being kind. Haven't been made in a while either.
You'll never find a Ruger Red Label for $350, unless Junior stole it from his Dad for meth money.
Why not the Remington 870? They're good pump guns. Try the Winchester 1300, lots of them out there too.
Good luck, but you also might want to research the subject further.0 -
That $350 limit is going to keep you out of any kind of quality double. You'll need to stay with a pump, you can get a Mosberg for $200, they are not the best looking but they sure are dependable. 0 -
You could do a lot worse than an 1100 or 870. As said by previous posters your budget target is going to pretty much rule out quality doubles. Another option might be an older Beretta; a 302 or 303. Some of them have pretty nice wood, they're light, handle well, and are reliable. I've had a couple in nice condition in the $350 to $400 range. 0 -
You can buy a nice winchester model 12 for 350 or less.[:)] 0 -

They 're around, takes alittle time. I guess my post meant they were everywhere and I didnt mean to imply that. I did, however, miss a pretty nice pre-war model 12 duck with a 32" barrel today for 400.00.Those pre-war model 12 duck's are hard to find in any condition.0 -
Why not a Remington 1100? One of the best Semi-Auto Shotguns that Remington ever produced! I like them much more than any of the 11-87's I ever owned! They are much smoother, quieter and better looking that some of the 11-87's I have seen. I had the chance to purchase one this past weekend at a local Gun Show for $375 out the door. Should have bit on it but I had my hands full and couldn't give it a real look-over. It had the wood of a 12 Gauge "Sporting" (real high grade with beautiful grain and swirls) but am not sure it was one! The wood was showing age cracks in the finish but with a great refinish job and that shotgun would bring $600 to $800. I have the guy's telephone number and may arrange to look it over real well.

All of the Remington 1100's around here are going for $700-$800 used. More than double your price range. And they don't fit your criteria of "pump or double barrel" either. As previously noted, any quality double is well out of that price range as well. Smith shotguns (and semi auto center fire pistols) leave a LOT to be desired in my experience. You're not looking for a wheel gun so I'd rule out Smith. Rugers are all above your $350 limit. I'm not sure what you have against the 870, but in my opinion, it's the absolute BEST you can possibly do with that budget. And sticking with pumps, it's hard to beat for general field/home defense use with ANY budget. I'd recommend you take another look at them. 0 -
When You said that You were not interested in a Remington 870, I assumed that You were not interested in the Express model, as You also mentioned that You were mainly looking for wood grain, something that has a great appearance, with good made parts. You really should consider a used 870 Wingmaster. Beautiful walnut stock and forend. Highly polished, blued parts that glide along effortlessly when you work the action. Any used Browning BPS (again, the walnut wood/blued metal version) should also easily meet your criteria. 0
