I shot one of these extensively. Killed a lot of deer. Mine prefered Remington Copper Solids. I cut my barrel to 20" and ported it. I also added a stick on cheek riser to the stock. Leupold 1 pc base & std. rings. 4x40 Nikon Monarch. 2" groups @100 yds, trajectory is tough at longer ranges. Feeding from magazine was iffy, I always single loaded mine. Good luck!!

Thanks for the input Greg! Accupoints or the solids were going to be my starting point to see where things went...you just likely saved me a few bucks! Was the barrel length not to your liking? Seems porting it would loose some velocity in addition to the shortened tube length? Feeding from the mag is something I had not really considered, although since I grew up shooting bolt action slug guns in Mi you think it would have occurred to me. Out of curiosity, how was ejection of spent and unspent hulls under that one piece base?

I didn't like the 24" barrel. Too long for the woods. I'm kinda short, I got tired of poking the muzzle in the snow. Can't see where a slight decrease in velocity is going to hurt a slug. They still make a huge hole. Ejection was fine, just feeding from the magazine was bad, shells would hang up on the feed ramp. I also tried Lightfield's, they shot about as well as the Copper Solids. Copper Solids were available locally, so that's what I zeroed with. I watched my brother neck shoot a doe at 175 yards with this gun, I never killed (or shot) with it over 150. The stick on cheek rest is vital (to me) for proper cheek weld. Makes the gun shoot a whole lot better, with less perceived recoil, as you can keep the stock in your shoulder pocket properly without "hunkering" down.

Found a few more things out and thought I would share it if anyone else is trying to throw one of these together for Deer Season. The "correct" one peice base is made by Evolution Gun Works. It is the same mount as the 110 long action round back rifle but was renamed to simplify their distribution and supply to Savage as well. Problem is it is out of stock from EGW and everyone else I can find online and in stores within 3 states. This reciever/base combination requires at least high rings as there is really no 'chamber swell' on the barrel where the diameter goes back down going towards the muzzle...there area where the scopes bell normally gets some relif distance. The heavy 20 ga barrel simply continues in a straight line from the reciever junction to the muzzle. Additionally, the stock drop is minimal, I believe in an effort to pick your cheek weld up to partly counter the raised scope centerline. I have mounted a Nikon Slughunter 3-9 x 44 on Warne high Permanents, and used a Weaver 2 piece for the Savage 110 Long Action Round Back. Would rather stay away from 2 piece, but prefer the Warnes and don't want to go the Leupold route (only other thing I could find workable as a set) . One advantage I have found already to this is the fully open ejection port. Fired 3 in hulls are long and take an entire complete cycle to get out of there...can only imagine the one piece might present an issue that way. Also, ran some 2 3/4 in and 3 in rounds through the action from the mag...3 in workedd great, 2 3/4's did not. Will report on accuracy results if ayone is interested.

OK...things went pretty bad wrong on this one. Two piece bases would require a scope body about"13 long....the Nikon isn't even close. Had no luck at any shops I checked out on a trip over the weekend...I might as well have been asking for a Flux Capacitor or something...lot's of big doe eyes and shaking heads.

Finally broke down and called EGW, who confirmed they did not have the 220 slug gun mount available, but sent out the correct one piece which is just a relabelled 110 LA anyway. They were really nice and confirmed the application for the 220. Cost a few bucks but seems a great product. I will report back when I have it on and ready to go...

Here is the final report. The Base from EGW arrived yesterday, and went on the gun spot on perfect. The buddy who I am setting it up for has started to run a little low on funds by this point, so I reused the Weaver "1 mediums that were on the cantilever 870 barrel the Nikon came off of. Much to my surprise they came out dead on for height, so I levelled the crosshairs, torqued everything to normal spec (made sure the weaver cross-bars were all the way to the front of the Piccatinney slots as they are a little thinner than the M1913 type cross bars)and bore sighted it to about 30 yards. He picked it up at lunch and had the following to report by 4:00 this afternoon:

Gun was bore sighted dead on windage and about 4 inches low at 50. He corrected the turrets and moved to 100 and used the first circle down (crosshairs are for 50 yds) ... in the 4 inch bull. Moved to 150 and used circle 2 ... in the bull again, 9 o'clock . Made 2 clicks right and moved to 200 ... "1 inch low, and "1 left. So far that was 4 shots to get to 200 yards! Fired 4 more, and managed a "4 group! He was so happy he is keeping the shoot and see and putting it up in the gun room! "4 isnt that great for most rifles at 200, but a slug gun!?!?

I am beyond happy with the whole set-up, and have to say I think Savage has a winner, and Christine at EGW saved this guys hunt this year. If anyone is looking to set their 220 up, I have to reccomend this set-up heavily!

hey, thanks for report!..I just set mine up and shot it yesterday..very pleased, I got my egw from midway this past week, had been backordered..savage recommends the barnes expander 3" and either size remington accutips..I used 2 3/4"..had maybe a 3" 100 yd group but think I can do better, more me than the gun..would love to know how much drop at 200 if sighted in for 100?? I believe 150 is
    - 3.5 to 4"..also have leupold 2-7 mounted on med luppy rings

Hi Jag. I mounted a Nikon Slughunter 3-9x40 BDC on the gun, and after zeroing at 50 yds on the crosshairs ("3 Accupoints), the gun followed the bubbles all the way down to the bottom at each respective yardage until the bottom bubble which printed in the bullseye at 200. If I extrapolate correctly, the drop from 100 to 200 would be about "9 or "10. Since the Nikon uses a 50yd zero, it's a little like comparing apples oranges, but I think I have the number about right. Since the EGW base is Piccattiny, I re-used Weaver medium rings that came off my friends 870 cantilever (trying to save him a little money). I assume you used Med. Weaver style Leupolds? How is your cheek weld? Everyone and his dog told me to use extra highs (even those who didn't know what base the 220 took...sorta' confusing!)for some reason unbeknownst to me. The mediums gave a great heigth and still have plenty of clearance; I would go so far as to say that I would consider even highs to be way too high as far as center axis of barrel and scope go! I also turned the Accutrigger down to bare lowest...that might be the reason you are experiencing a little less accuracy than you had hoped? I also wonder if the "3 'ers might get to the throat a little more effectively? At any rate, my buddy is super happy, and I bet you will be too once you get a really good grip on shooting the thing! I will admit that it is really odd shooting a bolt action slug gun with the same ergonomics as a 110 long action...seems wrong somehow, but hey, who cares, they really shoot! Best of luck next week...knock 'em dead!
