Both of your old single barrel break open breech lading shotguns are what are commonly known as "Trade Brand Name" shotguns. Those are shotguns made by a major maker (and before 1940) for and were sold by wholesalers or retailers who chose the name to go on the gun. Both guns with names WESTERN ARMS and EXCEL were made by the Crescent Fire Arms Company of Norwich,CT (1892 to 1931). Excel shotguns were also made by Iver Johnson'r Arms & Cycle Works of Fitchburg,,MA and Crescent-Davis Arms Corp also of Norwich (1931 to 1938) Don't know who sold the Western Arms shotgun but suspect it was Montgomery Ward Company of Chicago. IL. If the name on the gun is WESTERN ARMS CORP, it was made by Ithaca Gun Company of Ithaca,NY and also sold by Monkey Wards. These guns even when brand new were inexpensive (read cheap) utility grade shotguns selling for maybe $15.00. Their value today depends on the guns condition, the amount of original finish remaining on the metal and wood as well as the mechanical condition. Value for a prime example that appears to have come out of the factory yesterday afternoon might range as high as $175 while a rusty rotten incomplete piece of junk fit only as a fire place poker and parts salvage might bring $10. Most I have seen sold on the various gun auction sites sell for between $50 and $75.
