I am looking to buy a hunting revolver for whitetail deer. I would like to get something that looks similar to a Pietta Remington 1858 revolver. I really like the styling of the civil war era revolvers. Can anyone recommend something, brand and caliber. I do want center fire, modern loads. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank You!
    Ian

Uberti makes a reproduction of the 1875 Remington, which is basiclly the Model 1858 in cartridge. It's available in the traditional big bore revolver calibers (44-40 and 45 Colt).

Are those with modern smokeless powder or black powder?

The reproductions will be able to handle standard pressure smokeless loads. In other words, NO hot rod loads.

As stated before, only use black powder pressure level loads it these replica's, or the original's. This will severely limit you for hunting deer, to very short range, and precisely placed shots, as the power level of these are below marginal for deer.

If you want something along the line of a single action revolver to shoot warm loads, the Freedom Arms revolver's are top shelf, and Ruger BlackHawk, and Super BlackHawk are right there too.
