Rust in Powder?
My father sent me a pound of IMR 4831 in a metal can. I poured it in my powder thrower and a rust dust cloud was coming out with the powder. The powder looks to be dry but has an orange hue to it. Still safe to use or pitch it? If i pitch it, how would I? Is there a certain way? It is an entire pound. I was the one who opened it first (it is brand new but is VERY old, my dad hung onto it for a while because he had a surplus). Thanks!

your powder has started to 'degrade'(fancy name for 'go bad'), use it for fertiliser 0 -
uni82,
It's in a perfect state for late fall fertilizing...

And do NOT wait. Now that it has been exposed to air, the powder will deteriorate even faster. It can even self-combust in the can. Sprinkle it thinly on the lawn or garden and do it promptly. 0 -
powder is degrading, use it as fertilizer. As they degrade, they change in burn rate, which could potentially cause you catastrophic problems. 0
