H&R J97602
I have a Harrington Richardson Model J97602. I bought this gun 30 years ago, and it is still in it's original box with all of the paperwork. It's been fired very little. The action is extremely bad, which is probably why I haven't fired it much. It has a case hardened frame, 7.5 in. blue barrel, smooth, grips, and adjustable sights. It is in "as new" condition. I am thinking about taking it to a gun smith to have the action worked on, or selling it. Could someone give me an estimate as to the value of this gun? Any offers to buy would be considered also.
Thank you for your help.

So my 2003 blue book of gun values list a 976 at 100% $100. So its a nine shot swing out cylinder 22 LR and would be made between 1960 and 1985. The good news is H&R was the considered the best of the cheepies. I had one that you needed to pull the cylinder to load it, was a very good shooter though slow on reload. The swing outs I have looked at seemed a bit lame and loose. 0 -
No my gun is western style 9 shot with efection rod and loading gate. 0 -
As Bill Goforth will attest, the H&R descriptions and valuations in "THE BLUE BOOK..." Editions published before the 29th (2007) had many inaccuracies.
The Model 976 is a "convertible" revolver - and came from the factory with a .22 lr AND a .22 WMRF (magnum) cylinder. It is a DA/SA solid frame, with case color hardened frame and blued barrel and cylinder; pull pin cylinder releas, right side loading gate and a barrel mounted ejector rod. They are Western Style handguns with western style wooden grips, manufactured during the late 1970s into the early to mid 1980s.
With adjustible rear sight, yours is the Model 976 DELUXE. Current value of one in about 98% condition with both cylinders - similar to your piece - will retail around $280 +/- $25 depending upon your area. Having the box and original papers adds about $35 to the value.
Action loosens up with use - you may need to shoot 500+ rounds through it to lighten it up.
edited: Check Bill Goforth's answer to a similar question, to which you added your first request...it is much more comprehensive than the one I offered above from memory - however, my statement about pre 29th Edition "Blue Books..." being inaccurate with respect to H&R firearms - still stands.0 -
My gun is 22LR only no 22mag. 0 -
Jim,
Are you sure the 976 was a convertible?
I haven't seen many, but, all the ones I have seen, including my own, are 9 shot 22 lr. only.
Maybe you have it mixed up with the model 676?
The 29th Blue Book does say it's a convertible, but I think it may be a mistake or a misprint?
I emailed Bill G, to ask about this as soon as I saw it in the 29th edition.
If I remember right, he agreed, and was going to change the description.
Don't know if it ever happened though.

to help clear this up here is what i posted to the other question about this model. but the confusion does not stop here in the 1978 catalog the model J97603 is listed as 7 1/2 inches, in 1979 the same model (fixed sight) is listed as a 6 inch barrel and then in 1980 it is back to 7 1/2 inches. this model J97603 is not listed in 1981 only the deluxe version is listed (J97602)in 1981.
MODEL 976 (TRANSFER BAR IGNITION)
1977-1980
Solid Frame, Double Action, Rod, Ejection, Western Style Grip. 9 shot 22 Long rifle, Finish Blue/Case Harden Color, barrel Length 7? inches, Fixed Sights. listed as J97603 in catlogs.
VALUE: 100%=$295 60%=$175
MODEL 976 DELUXE (TRANSFER BAR IGNITION)
1978-1981
Solid Frame, Double Action, Rod, Ejection, Western Style Grip. 9 shot 22 Long rifle, Finish Blue/Case Harden Color, barrel Length 7? inches, Adjustable Sights. listed as J97602 in catalogs
VALUE: 100%=$305 60%=$185
this model was only manufactured until 1981 because basically it was a duplication of other H&R models

Bill,
Thanks,
There is still some confusion on my part though,
My AU prefix model 97603 is a 9 shot 22 lr. only, not a 6 shot convertible?
I just got out my 1980, and 1981 catalogs, and yes, the model 976 is listed as a 9 shot 22 lr revolver in both catalogs.
Maybe some changes are needed in the description of this model?

sorry about that what i posted was from the wrong source (pre correction for the blue book. i will correct it. as you may have notice my proof reading abilities are not that great. that is why i do a lot of cut and paste. now i have to look at what i sent the blue book and see if it is correct.
the model 976 is NOT a combo gun. THANKS JIM for keeping me straight.

Thank You All for the help.

billeyboy - you should either refrain from saying "Any offers to buy would be considered also" or change it to "If you are interested in purchasing this gun, let me know so I can list it on the auction side."
The owners of gunbroker are not very fond of people who use the free forums to bypass the auction side. Remember, it's the auction side that generates the revenue that pays for the forum side.0
