Bert h. and other winchester/cartridge people???
I am looking at a 73 winichester that on the barrel has -32 W.C.F. and the barrel gauges a 38 caliber. What ever was in front of the -32 is worn off so here is my question:
Did they ever have a cartridge that was designated 38-32 WCF?The owner of the gun, it is going to auction, had it down as a 38-32 BUT i cannot find that caliber ANYWHERE or any references to it. I appreciate ANY info as to what this could be. There are 2 32 WCFs in model 92s at the same auction. The loading gate on them are shorter than the 73 marked -32 WCF so I am doubting the rifle is a 32 WCF or 32-20. Please let me know if any know what this 73 could be.

I checked Cartriges of the World #11. There are lots of other .32 and .38 WCF's in it, but no reference to a .38-32 WCF. 0 -
I would suggest doing a chamber cast and see if it is of 38-40 dimensions. It may have been rebored due to a shot out barrel. 0 -
Other than the .22's, the only calibers in the '73 were 32, 38 & 44 W.C.F. Does the brass elevator have the caliber marking? 0 -
Is it this one??? ... Winchester 1873 Third Model Short Rifle .38 WCF s/n 281292 mfg 1888 - 20" part round barrel w/ivory bead front and flat top rear sights, plain trigger, half magazine, case colored receiver, nickel plated crescent buttplate, extra finish walnut stocks. Hello JJ,
Without the benefit of actually examining the rifle, it is not possible to say for sure what has transpired with it, but my guess is that some took an old pitted out 32 WCF (32-20) barrel and bored it out to 38 WCF (38-40). That said, the 38 WCF cartridge is actually .401 caliber.
The early production Model 1873s in 32 WCF were marked "CAL 32 W.C.F.".0 -
Thanks for the input gents. It sold at an auction today and I believe those that said it has probably been rebored to 38 WCF are right by how pitiful the rifle looked. It sold for a tad bit under $700 which was cheap in a way being original 73s are not around much but then again high due to condition. I did not buy it, the ones buying guns today were paying too much IMHO for what they were and every gun with the exception of a couple needed major work of some kind. Again thanks for the input, the fact it was marked 32 BUT measured close to a 38 cal with a bore gauge and with the dash in front of the 32 was confusing to say the least. 0
