Custom Winchester 1894 from 1975?
Question for a Winchester expert out there - I have a model 94 made in 1975 that doesn't seem to be in the catalog. It's got a much higher level of blueing than typical, has extra nice walnut stock (straight pull stock, not pistol grip) and has cut checkering on grip and forearm, not the typical squared off pattern of the later XTR models. No out of the ordinary engravings or stampings on the metal. Could this be a "custom" gun made either for someone who worked at the New Haven factory or maybe a limited run for dealers or something like that? Thanks for your help!

Can't seem to attach a pic here! Checkering is tapered toward back of grip to single point at bottom, comes out to three separate points at front of grip. Forearm checkering is straight across the top, comes out to one point on each side of top, then, comes out to a single point in middle on each side, back to a single point on bottom of each side. Looks nothing like the later XTR checkering jobs. Don't think stock was an aftermarket add on - the Winchester buttplate fits too perfectly, no buggered screw heads. Checkering pattern also has a regular larger diamond pattern within it. Does that help? 0 -
Read the second "sticky" from the bottom at the top of the experts page here. It tells you how you can post pictures. 0 -
I will send you an e mail - send one back, and I will send you a pic. Thanks! 0 -
Based on your description of the bluing and checkering pattern, your Model 94 has been non-factory enhanced. You can send pictures to me at Win1885@msn.com 0 -

Thanks for the pic post, Horse Plains Drifter! 0 -
I would say it is been restocked with nice after market stocks. Can't tell about the blueing. 0
